OK, everyone has seen the Chinese shovel, im impressed, but im not going to pay what there asking, so i was looking around and found another called the Crovel, ill tell you what, id pay for that at the same cost before buying the other, but i still think its a little hi for a folding shovel! so i was thinking, why not make your own? all you would need is a 18" wrecking bar, 1" black iron "T", 3/4" X 1" black iron bushing, and some scrap steel! or even a old shovel head.. of course your going to need a wielder or someone who can do it for you. but you can get everything above for under $20, in the right places, or you should have floating around the garage! my neighbor has a piece of 1/8" steel diamond plate hes giving me, and the wielder, and yet i found a breaker bar in the shed that i didnt even know i had, and a crappy hammer(kool beans) so the only thing i need is the "T" and bushing, both under $5! i would put a photo of what im going to make but i have no clue how to put it on here, but i posted the link below for the shovel that i like, from that i think you can get the idea of what im making.. "T" wielded to the shovel, bushing wielded to the chopped off bar, and a hammer head wielded to the end of the bar.. simple no? let me know what you think of the idea!!

Have you looked into military style e tools? What about the Cold Steel shovel, doesn't fold but it looks solid. No so sure about turning the shovel into a multitool with a hammer and what not.

My pic kinda decided to move so its not lined up right, but really whats the diff? i mean theres not to much to do, just some wielding, and using the grinder. grant it, its a little bit heavier, but. it wont break, unlike the other military shovels thats clips are plastic,, JR

P.S. I mean for camping driving the stakes, in the trunk dig yourself out in winter, accident smash windows, and as backpacking,,

That is interersting, never seen that one before. No snow in my environment, just blazing sun 300+ days a year. I do carry some stuff in the trunk of my car, mostly some handtools, jumper cables, gallon of water, blanket, pRacorod 50', and a wonderbar. Believe it or not, Gerber makes a nice shovel, the E tool. It has received much higher reviews than the one SOG makes and it appears to have the same dimensions.

I like to keep things simple when it comes to my gear in the car. Not sure I need a shovel sized multitool like that. It would be awkward being angled in a setbelt, while upside-down after an accident trying to break windows with a crowshovel. Just my opinion. I would rather have a dedicated glassbreaker tied with paracord to something inside the car. If you were to undertake a project like that, i would be very interested in seeing the end result. It can be done.

I really like the idea of the handle being something that has more use to it. A crow bar end is cool. Though that makes it more for urban use and adds substantially to the weight vs. a hollow metal handle. The chinise one cannot be beat though as it has a can opener built in! And it does a bunch of other cool things where the spade meets the handle. :D

IMHO, the biggest plus is that it's NOT Chinese. To be honest, I wonder if it really works that well. It's sort of like a jack of all trades, but master of none.

folding shovel? CASE 580, John Deere 310, Caterpillar 428, model numbers may varies and could have been updated.
