Looking to explore the world of rugged leather goods. What other companies besides Saddleback have you found? I love to find high value for the dollar companies, so let me now what is out there.

Having done a fair amount of research on the subject, it seems like the only brands that aren't Saddleback (and under a reasonable price point) are those that are blatantly imitating their style but with thinner leather and slightly lower prices. However, I would welcome suggestions to the contrary as I love my Saddleback stuff but am also always comparison shopping.

Orvis did have a bullhide luggage collection. Not as rugged looking as saddlebag but less expensive.

My first thought when I saw the title was saddleback...I wish i had a bag from them, but I only have a bible cover and a moleskine cover. both a super tough. If you don't mind going away from leather, you might look at the canvas bags from duluth trading, made from firehose material. I've heard a lot of good stuff about them...I need to get thier truck bag lol

Walden, Mitchell, Custom Hide, Filson and Coronado Leather all make some heavy duty leather bags. J Peterman offers the Counterfeit Postal Bag styled after the USPS all leather bags of the past. It's pretty nice but I have seen other takes on the postal bags that I like better. Check out ETSY for as there are usually a few artisan made leather postal style bag as well as other styles there. J Crew used to offer the Artisan Messenger bag, a oiled leather postal bag variation, which is heavier duty than anything you might expect from them. It has been discontinued but they show up on ebay often and that is where I bought a new one about a year ago.

You might also want to consider having a custom bag made by a US maker out of US leather to your specifications. Most of the heavy duty leather bags, including those from Saddleback, use 4-5oz. cowhide but you are certainly not limited to that with a custom. Coronado makes some bags out of 8-9oz Bison leather.

Etwas bags are amazing. Hand made in Williamsburg. I managed to get one here in the U.K. Very stiff, heavy duty leather. I use it when stoating about London and I know I'm going to be buying lots of stuff instead of a more boring backpack. Certainly feels like it will last a lifetime.http://etwasbags.com
