Hi Guys, I'm considering buying a Heavy Duty Sewing machine around $250 to $500. I'm planning on making some pouches/bags from 500 to 1050 Denier Nylon and also making some tarps and doing repairs. Maybe 2 to 3 layers of fabric and nothing to fancy. Not trying to be the next Maxpedition, more hobbiest/I want to do my own thing.

Been looking at the Singer HD-110 and HD-105. What other Heavy duty sewing machines are in that price range? Are these okay for my use?

I've heared people mention getting a used machine. What do I look for in a used machine? Makes, models or specs?

Thanks,

Heber

I'd stay away from singer. They were great in the old days but not today.I don't know if you can get much at those prices new. The Janome 1600 series might be what fits your needs but it's $ 900 or more....1600P-DB - $ 500 .

My SO is a seamstress working mostly on wedding gowns and she uses mostly older Singers,I don't know the model number of the one she uses at the store but she has a couple of 241-11 machines at home, those machines have a deep throat that works nice for leather and drapery work, she doesn't care as much for those when working on wedding gowns though because they have an oil pan full of oil under the machine to keep it lubed which pretty much assures that it won't wear out but she has to be careful with the oil machines around wedding gowns. You can find them one ebay occasionally and they usually go for around $250-$300 on a table but you'll need to find one close to where you live. She also has a Pfaff machine that she says is a better than the Singers, she's never used that one so I don't really know how hard they are to get repaired or parts for,she never as any trouble with the Singers.
