Heavy Duty watch

I'm looking for a heavy duty watch that can take the banging and thrashing of the outdoors, but still be worn out to dinner.

I'm currently wearing a Casio analog/digital combo, the "dive" style watch that's in a stainless case.

I like the Seiko SKX173, it's an automatic, very minimal in design, and looks to be of good quality.

Besides G-Shocks, (which I like, but I'm looking for a more traditional style), any recommendations in the less-than-$200 range? Dive watch styling preferred, and something that will fit with my Waterborne strap :)

You're on the right track looking at the Seiko Automatics.
I bought a Seiko Auto Diver 200m several years back from Costco for all of $135. I honestly like it better than the Rolex Submariner I used to own.
I just put it on my wrist in the morning and don't care what I do during the day. It's got several scratches and dings, but like a good knife, it just adds character and tells a story.

If you are looking for a tough, affordable mechanical watch that looks nice you should take a look at Poljot.

I can't speak for their chronographs or automatic products, but I have had nothing but good experiences with their manual wind 17-jewel models.

I wear my Poljot Aerowave every day, and in six months of use it has never failed me. This includes potentially damaging things such as rock climbing, ocean waves, and regular use of an impact wrench.

It has a couple of dings and scratches in the matte finish but overall has held up very well.

I think it looks quite nice and is more unique than your average Seiko or Citizen (or TAG or Rolex for that matter).

Edited to add: There is nothing wrong with the Seiko diver Automatics either. It was actually my second choice after the Aerowave.

Any watch that you thrash outdoors, will eventually look like you did.

So just wear the G-shock outdoors, and get a nicer watch for going out.

For tough metal watches that look cool you have determine your budget. >$200 >$500 >$1000

This range would be considered cheaper.

For the $200 range: The auto seikos, and converted seikos fall in that category.

Around $500 you can check out the Marathon SAR, MarcelloC, and Fortis watches.

If you can spend up to $1000, there are a lot more to choose from.

Bill Yao sells Seiko Autos with converted dials that look really cool and are pretty inexpensive.

kinzli,I've been wearing My Seiko Divers watch for going on two years now and have been very satisfied with it.tom.

:)

I know that some don't agree with me, but I think that a basic Luminox would take care of your needs. They are built tough and still look great.

I am in the minority that prefer quartz movements to automatics.

My favorite for toughness with good looks is the St. Moritz Format 2Ti with a blue face. It combines classy dive-watch styling with a full set of digital chronograph features.

I am also very fond of Citizen's Eco-Drive line.
