Well to console myself I finally scored a blade I have wanted to try for a long time via a trade with a fellow Hog. The HD. The AD (a sweet blade in its own right) just didn't do it for me. But the HD feels just right. What a beefy little guy. Anyway, I have a few questions for those who own and "use" theirs.

(1) What are the various chores you guys use the HD for? At home or at play. In the city or in the woods?

(2) What type of edge profile do you guys like to keep on it?

Pics would be great! Which reminds me that I need to post some of my new toy later. ;) Thanks guys.

i dig mine too. perfect edc size, great for utility type chores. opening boxes, mail, etc.

it may not have enough belly for skinning or cleaning game, but what a great blade shape!

i just sharpen mine on the spyderco, with steel and strop after.

You post this and no pics!? Whats wrong with you!!?? LOL.:D

its in here somewhere....

I’ve found that the HD is useful around the farm: good for cutting the strings on hay bales, opening bags of feed, and tidying up leather and canvas.

The thick little blade is good for cleaning up the end of polypipe when plumbing troughs and taps.

The blade is too thick for fine work, but great for heavy work that requires a small blade.

Oops, I forgot to mention sharpening.

Freehand on diamond stones, like with every other knife I own and use.

I have already put her to use so you can see some light scuffing. The discoloring on the handle is just water.

HD -vs- Phone Book (1.59MB)

Nice vid cap Tyrkon! Like the pics! Glad to see another one of these guys at work! :D

Lovely score Tyrkon... very nice indeed. I've not seen the HD much...

PS - you must have a sign up outside your house reading "will give cash for old phone books"

Because of the rate you go through them! ;)

Very nice! Now get to strippin' it down to bare INFI... :D

You read my mind. Polished spine and satin finish. Well not just yet. I have to wear the coating down a bit first. But that shouldn't take long.

The reason I like the phone book test is that it is my gage as to how sharp my blades are. I use to get them just "hair shaving sharp" but if I take it a bit further they will do the phone book thing. And since I am a bone head at sharpening this is simple enough for me for now. I used my trusty Apex Edge Pro on it as I do on all my blades. But some day I have to develop those freehand skills.

Thanks man. Actually I think that was our current phone book! Just kidding. :p I think.

sweet score tyrkon!

i always thought the HD felt better in hand than the AD, regardless of blade profile. it just feels so good.

I had a HD back when we were moving into the new library (where I work). I had great fun stabbing the HD into the wall of the old building. It was some type of drywall with a rough wallpaper overtop of it. It was too much fun:D

I miss the HD, but hopefully my muddy AD set will arrive Monday. Congrats. I always love to see these earning their keep. Use it!

I thinned it out a bit so now it's a viscous slicer while still maintaining its, er....., "heavy dutyness". :)

Does anyone have a nekkid HD or a pic of one? Just for future reference you know. ;)

Randucci has a stripped one, you might be able to track down the shot, it was before Blade last year (he had it with him at dinner).

I use mine for everything, CO has a 3.5" limit, with affirmative defense being, I was going to the woods , so I carry the HD.

The 100 mph winds last Wednesday dropped a lot of green leafed branches, (don't usually blow that hard once the trees leaf ) so I got to use it a bunch. I was in competition with a guy with a small bow saw. I had him beat up to 2", holding the lanyard to get extra momentum, beyond that I was having to make baton cuts, worked good up past 3" diameter. I was impressed with the damage you could do with such a small blade. I cleared a few trees (3" - 4") off the creek path with the HD and a baton, I got pretty proficient at it. Wack till the spine is flush, tweak, remove, rotate side and do again, looked like a beaver had been there.

Only smashed my thumb once, I can bend it now and the funny colors under the nail are starting to grow on me , literally !
