I'm new to the forum and this is my first post. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction if this has already been talked about or posted before.

I have acquired a large breaker bit, about 4" in diameter and about 36" long from my father. It was discarded at a construction site because the tip was mushroomed and deformed. I am building a power hammer and was thinking of slicing this thing up and using it for the hammer dies. Does anyone know what steel is commonly used on large breaker bits like this? I have found info on smaller, handheld demo hammer bits but nothing on these larger ones.

Steel is likely S7. It will be far more trouble to cut up the bit, surface grind it flat, and make dies than to order a bunch of blocks of S7 or other steel for the dies. Most folks use 4140 for dies. It is cheap and readily available in any size needed.

I'll move this to Shop Talk, where more folks will see it and offer pother comments.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction, both with where this thread should be and what to do with the bit. I will fill out the rest of my profile ASAP. I appreciate all the help and I'm looking forward to future discussions on this forum.
