I have a maxpeditin falcon 2 that I use as an edc pack and a vulture 2 for hikes, but I'm wouldn't mind having a giant 7000ci heavy load pack just to have it. As much as the vulture 2 is awesome, I don't know how comfortable it would be at 50lb's+ o_0

Ideally I'd love something like the mystery ranch kodiac or kifaru EMR but they are just to much money for how often I'm likely to use it. I got a mil spec plus brand 85L pack and it's a joke. The construction is okay, but it has no frame support at all. why have a 6,000ci+ pack if you can't pack it beyond 25lb's?

so... are there any packs on the market that can load past 100lb's for under 300$ that ride well at that weight? preferably 6,000ci+ (unless it's got a lot of molle for pouches)

how do you think that would compare to the Eberlestock J107M?

I really wish maxpedition would make something comparable...

thats it. I'm buying the kelty o_0

The eberlestock comes out to 400$ when you add the camp duffel, and it throws the weight much farther away from the body than the kelty, which also has a sleeping bag compartment on the bottom. I'd rather a bit of up down expansion than horizontal away from the back... I do wish the kelty had webbing on the belt though, it would be very nice to have a dump pouch there for snacks.

You can find a used Kifaru that will fill your bill - but 100lb of gear is alot of gear to pack

Kobalt makes a nice tool box for your truck :D

You could see if you can find a used Dana Design Astralplane, maybe on e-bay or somewhere. I practically gave my Astralplane Overkill away on here, rather than post it all over the place trying to find a buyer. It was about the same thing as the MR Kodiak.
I don't know anything about Kelty packs, so can't say anything positive or negative about them, but that one NorCal posted looks pretty nice.

So got this today... it is heavy. and straps everywhere, some of which I don't entirely understand... mostly there are two wire framed wings that come out along side of the belt that have velcro on the tips I'd assume that they either get attached to the shoulder straps or to the belt as a stabilizer, but I'm not seeing any loose straps that have velcro attached to them (I may find it when i look more?).

I'm hopefully going to get a mystery ranch kodiac in the mail in a few days. I'm going to try to load them up to 50/75lb's and hike with them before deciding which to keep. They are both sooooo much higher qaulity than I actually need

the low profile lid is housed in the draw bag top:

It is top loading, but also comes with a front panel that has a mesh seperator between the external face and inside, creating a mesh outer pocket.

It's got this flat plastic plate in the bag, I'm not sure if it's to keep things towards the back, or to stiffen the pack?

It's funny looking at this compared to the milspec plus mil pack 85, which is completely frameless... I have no idea what it would do loaded past 30lb's but I'm positive it wouldn't be comfortable.

It will be next to impossible to get an accurate judgement on the pack if you try to carry it as high as it appears in the picture. That padded waist belt should ride at the top of your pelvic girdle, four inches or so lower than it is. That will transfer the pack weight to your hips and off of your back. Have you looked at an online review of this pack or contacted Kelty customer service regarding your fit and strap questions? Possibly there is a mating piece missing if the questionable straps seem to have no purpose. Or they may be ski or hiking pole attachment straps. Dunno. They can also explain their placement of the stays and support sheets. Neat looking pack though!

I think the Kelty top lid can be detached and reattached to the clips by the sternum strap for a front easy access bag on the trail.

Is it possible those wired wings are there to aid in lifting the pack on or adjusting straps while the pack is on with a load in it? Something solid to grab and lift?

It's not so much of a fit question, I just put it on for the picture without adjusting it at all right when i got it. The arrow with the question mark is pointing at the wire frame wings that stick out seperate along side the belt. I may end up asking kelty what they do if I can't find it online.

In the picture I have the belt set like this:

I wear my pants right on top of the hips ball joint, so it probably makes it look like the packs belt is in the curve of my waist, but it's wrapped around the top of the hip bone.

I tried the top of the bag and it does fit perfect onto the female snaps on the shoulder straps. kinda weird but it totally works, and it would give easy access to a decent amount of storage space. The wings next to the belt might be for lifting... I'd think straight drag handles would have been better for that, and they have velcro on the tips... kinda weird o_0

The weird wings minus the messy room behind it. They run along side the belt and are wire framed. the covering over the top is canvas, but the flats are made of spandex material. it's the velcro tips that confuse me...

after looking at the video of the pack rotating around from the kelty site, I realized what the spandex/wire frame wings are for. They attach to the pack itself via a pocket and are held on by the velcro. They then attach to the belt via one of two pockets, one on the bottom and one on the top, the inside of each pocket being covered in velcro as well. In the picture right above this post you can see a vertical line of stitching on the belt, that's the end of the 2 pockets that the wings slip into.

It's a kind of belt stabilization system that pushes the pack away from the belt on both sides to keep the entire pack from rocking back and forth at the hip level.
