Here in upstate New York near Corning, heavy smoke kept everyone inside today as the air looked like something out of an apocalyptic movie and I took this photo a few minutes ago of the sun seen through the haze. It’s clearing up a little now but it’s a scary time

Out here on the lsland the sky was orange the morning and this eve towards dusk. 200+ miles away and I’ve got scratchy throat and eyes from the smoke.

Raining now, hopefully that will clear the air a bit.

Thanks Gary, I was wondering where the smoke was coming from today.
When I woke up this morning the light coming through the shade was unnatural and the weather app reported smoke so I investigated a bit, not enough obviously.
There were some wildfires in NJ and PA, thought that was it...

Felt like I was in an episode from the Walking Dead!
Spooky stuff

I’m in Western New York, and this morning the haze was thicker, the sun was beet red, and now you can smell smoke as soon as you step outside. Yesterday it wasn’t so noticeable, to me anyway.

Yah, it kinda cleared up smell wise late last night, but this morning it's back to a heavy haze. Funny thing I looked at my driveway and saw what looked like orange stains but, it was just where the sun was shining on it ;)
I've seen some of the videos on youtube of people driving through the wild fire areas up there and I would not want to even attempt to drive through that! looks like zero visibility with a high risk of being burnt up...

It's seeping into our house right now as well, we're running an air purifier to help with that.

Sun is shining now, actual Sun, haze has moved on, air is clear, or at least much clearer than before! Sure seems nice to walk outside and breath again!

Now you guys know what it was like in CA a couple years ago. Hazy skies and the smell of smoke everywhere.

If you can see/smell it, wear a N95 (or equivalent) mask when you go outside. You'll protect your lungs.

It has NOTHING to do w/Covid.

BTW, I don't know how extensive the damage is in Canada from the current fire there but the fires in CA had a major impact on NorCal communities, some of which (like Paradise) were completelty burned down and major neighborhoods in Santa Rosa which were wiped out.

So, while the haze/smoke was an inconvenience to use in the SFBA (like it i for people in NYC), it's nothing compared w/the cost in property damage and human life that was lost in CA (and like will be lost in Canada) to the fires.

I'm amazed by the smoke this year- we've gotten smoke before from wild fires out west, but this was the first time I could smell burning wood.
Checking in from just north of Hartford.

...I hope it's not hitting any large patches of poison ivy...
