I found this the other day and thought it was interesting. The hedonic treadmill basically states that despite good or bad events people return to a stable level of happiness. The example it gives in the photo is with cell phone data but it no doubt applies to other areas of life including knife buying.

What do you think about this? In reguards to your knife collecting are you on the treadmill? Are you off the treadmill and content with your knifes? Do you love running on the treadmill?

Personally, I like walking on the treadmill a little bit. 😉

Looks a lot like most freemium mobile game models. Which is exactly why I don’t play any of them any more.

I spent about a week on that treadmill years ago. Haven’t been back on it since.

I'm essentially off the treadmill. I buy a few knives a year now and almost all are off the exchange here. $50-135 range. Nothing too extravagant. Thankfully, I have simple tastes and keep to a strict budget.

Social media has turned the speed of that treadmill up to 12mph and its destroying society.

I agree with the cycle, but a key word that I think is missing is "novelty". Once the novelty of a new knife (or any item, but specifically luxury/collectible items) wears off, the cycle is doomed to repeat itself and we look for the next "fix".

The chase is better than the catch, comes to mind. We are happy when we are chasing.

It takes a strong man (or bankruptcy) to break that cycle.
