Heftier Liner Lock, CQC-11

Hi, STR. I’m a longtime lurker that is really grateful for the tutorials on knife mechanicals that you provide here. I have a CQC-11 that has given me good service, but the liner has moved all the way to the far side of the blade. The liner is still fully on the blade and feels strong, but I don’t know if I’m OK until the liner moves outside the blade edge.

Mindful that you’re not overly fond of creating a lot of large Ti framelock conversions (and not sure I want to go that route), what is your take on a replacement liner, maybe 0.085 to 0.100? Would that be much ado for little gain? I was thinking just the one side, I’m not worried about a little asymmetry. Wondering your thoughts.

Thanks for your time, and this forum. John

Thanks John. It may be possible to convert the folder this way. My main concern of course is the hardware. If the screws go through a thicker liner and the G10 on the lock side and the original factory side too they will all be too short. I could do it with a ti side of just the ti by itself using a thinner material but I'd prefer to use something like the .118 or .125 thickness tittanium I have here over the .160 which quite frankly I'm getting tired of cutting and grinding on. I know to a lot of folks that they might think there isn't much difference between that and .125 but boy you sure see and feel it working it and especially cutting it when it gets up above .125 thickness. At least this is the case for me with the means I have at my disposal to cut it.

I don't think I'd want to do it thinner than .110 really. Anything less will make it difficult to manage working with the existing hardware and especially the pivot barrel which I would not recommend modifying at all if it can be avoided. I would hate to run into a situation where that had to be shortened to work.

Idealy I'd love to do it using the old G10 over again but I'm not sure its possible unless I use barrels in the rear and recess the head of the pivot barrel deeper on each side to make up for the difference in thickness. Then I may be able to balance the hole package out to a nice user friendly thickness but again this is iffy and I really hate permanently changing the folder parts when I can avoid it.

Again I appreciate your comments on my forum. Its nice to know its appreciated. I try to be honest and not let my personal feelings for the makers or manufacturers interfere with my take on the knives I am asked about and to answer questions as fully as I can. I guess some think I come across as if I'm attacking a certain lock or even certain people and this bothers me because it is not my intent. Hearing that some like my writing and information is good news to me. Thanks for stopping by my forum.

STR, thanks for your thoughtful reply.

If you fit a 0.110 replacement liner (about 0.050 thicker than the existing) using the original G-10 on the lock side only, am I being too naive to ask if the original pivot and screws can be used if the G-10 is countersunk 0.050 more on that side? Or is there too little material for that?

I'll never say to a craftsman that it doesn't matter what it looks like, because I know you guys aren't wired that way, but I do put function ahead of form.

Thank you for your response. John

As I recall John the head of both sides of the pivot are already recessed down in there pretty good. Chances are it would bottom out the hole making the screw down point the ti underneath at least on the non screw side of the pivot. Again I always hesitate to modify harder to replace parts like the G10 overscale just for the fact that they are so hard if not impossible to replace.

Emerson would just return it to you as voided warranty no can do. Screws are another thing. I actually have bins of the same screws Emerson uses. The pivot however is unique and I'd hesitate to modify that either.

If I had the knife in front of me apart on my bench I could take some measurements and determine more but once I get things back to normal here after this storm and the new one that is supposed to hit us tonight before we have even recovered from the last one I will be so far behind that due to that plus being hit hard with a lot of work this last quarter that I'd be into mid to late Jan before I could probably reply to you unless I get a big burst of energy and just knock all this stuff out.

In short it may be possible to make it work it may not. I'd just have to look to know more I think.

Thanks. I think I'll send it down early next year, after I pick an interim replacement. I'll send this thread with it and you can put it in the queue and have a look when you can and let me know what you think.

Your address is in one of the stickies, right? John

I'm not sure. I know its on the forum in a couple of places but just so you don't have to search

I'm sure it can be done. I'll do some measurements and figure out the best way to do her when it gets here.

Thanks
