As a matter of personal opinion, I much prefer a knife that leans over to the hefty side. I suppose this is a habit that whispers in my ear that for a metal object to be considered a knife, it must have a weighty "feel".

I know some people prefer a knife that's light. Some don't care so long as it cuts well.

But I notice friends who have handled my knives prefer those which are slightly on the heavy side. Somehow the weight, to them anyway, denotes the strength of the knife.

I guess this is not altogether true but it's hard to persuade them otherwise. It could be one of those notions long associated with "good" knives. I mean the weight issue.

I both prefere and are impressed with hefty knives most of the the
time.
That being said if the knife is too heavy it's not impressive. For me it is a slight weight diff. that gives the feel of "Quality build".

In order to impress me with a light knife it must be very light and made with good materials.

Because I have more than one knife
when I chose my EDC for the day weight is one of the things
I do consider.

I have a couple Spyderco Delicas; One FRN and one stainless. I "like" the stainless one better as it just "feels" stronger than the "plastic" one. The stainless one also looks more "serious".

To me it depends on the knife and it's intended use.

Choppers, camp knives should be on the heavier side.

Fighters like my Bagwell Bowie are light, fast, and quick to redirect the blade in battle [ as it should be ].

Folders, I have no preference, have carried both types with pocket clips for years.

My favorites now are the folding Karambit from Tarani, [ which is lightweight ], relatively speaking and Emerson neck claw.

Long knives, the Piorik Kwaiken in JSP shoulder rig or static cord dependant on dress for the day, and Bagwell Bowie [carried not that often ].

For defensive work, leave the heavys home.

For camp chores, leave the lightweights home.

I've been leaning towards thinner blades, lately. I work in an office and do more cutting than prying. For yard work I'll take a khukuri (heavy). I've been on a traditional kick so my trapper may weigh more than a Delica but I like the thin carbon steel blades. A year from now? Who knows what I'll have in my pockets?

Generally I like a lighter weight knife. I don't do much heavy duty chopping, prying or the like. Seems like if I have a big honking blade on me my pants start falling off

I guess I like a little heftier knife, not too heavy though....sorta like the way i like my women ;)

Depends on what kind of knife I want to get.

For gentleman knife, slim and lightweight.

For hunting, a bit stubby but lightweight.

For survival/camping chores, definitely heavy and hefty.

Sticky, your avatar is probably the grossest I've seen so far. :D

I generally like heavy, but Jerry Hossom can sure make a believer in light out of you.

What about a pool cue?? Do you prefer a light stick or heavy stick?? Just wondering. :)

Blades

Pool would definately go to Heavy

As for knives, I havn't carried anything over 12 inches nor ever felt the need to, so I would go for light...cutting power over prying power
