I am shopping for a height gage.
Can anyone tell me if carbide tip is nessesary. I suspect that hardened steel tip of the gage might not be able to scratch hardened blade.

I would get one alexmin , if for nothing else than wear resistance . If you are buying a new height gauge chances are it is going to come with one these days , --- I think . Another tool I like carbide face on is my 0-1" mic , since it is used all day long to measure cutting tool dia., end mills , drills , reamers etc. etc.

I'd certainly go for the carbide tip. Most of them come this way these days anyway, even the cheapos. For what its worth, the cheap height guages are totally sufficient for knifemaking. :)
