Here is the situation. Bill put a message on the board Thursday AM PST that he had a problem and was going to St. Mary's to have it checked out, and might have to stay there a while.

I didn't pay much attention on Thursday in case he ended up getting home late. Friday when he did not come up on the net, I called, but the only Martino in St Mary's was a James Martino in cardiac care and HE wasn't being allowed calls. My calls to Yangdu got the answering machine.

Today I went out as as I did Friday, checked the Reno paper and Bill's name still wasn't in the obituaries, so I tried St. Mary's again, and this time got put through to a James Martino who answered to Uncle Bill.

Here's the skinny: what he had Thursday morning was determined to have been a moderate heart attack. According to Bill, probably because of too much Heinekins, too much smoking, and too many days work without a day off. He's just laying there in the bed today and tomorrow while the doctors take the weekend off, then come back to do an angiogram on him on Monday. Then depending on the results, probably an angioplasty on another day, but they are hoping open heart surgery is not needed. If it goes well, home by the end of next week.

For now, Uncle Bill's addresses are:

Room 546 ( cardiac care unit ) Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center, 235 West Sixth Street, Reno, NV 89520-0108

Phone (775) 770-3000

Web www.saintmarysreno.com ( I haven't checked the website out and don't know anything about it yet ).

Thanks for the update, Rusty!

Thanks for the updates Rusty. I am still running the Malas for Uncle Bill. Both of them (Yangdu and Uncle Bill) are in our thoughts and prayers.

Rusty, we really appreciate your making the effort to keep us current on Uncle Bill's condition.

Oh, the part about Heinekins in cardiac care was that last night they let him have one for dinner, and we'll have to see if they let him have another with dinner tonite.

I thought hospitals operated on the Marquis de Sade principal that the more uncomfortable you were the quicker you'd go away - not that if you felt good mentally you'd get well quicker physically. Maybe they're setting him up for the good cop/bad cop routine.

Thanks a lot for the update, Rusty. Did you actually checked the obituaries for unlce Bill's name? I'm still loughig now.

And happy to learn that open heart surgery is unlikely.

Hey, I didn't know James Martino was Uncle Bill until late this morning and none of the other hospitals had any Martino. I'm a 132 mile drive each way to and from Reno. Yangdu wasn't answering the phone.

If the old coot DIDN'T make it into the obits, then he had to still be out there, and I didn't see a reason to waste my time looking somewhere's else 'til I'd established they warn't afixin' to plant him. That was the easy part to do, stead of feudin with nurse Sister Be-Goed to hell, which was next on the list!

Ahhh heck.

Sigh.

The good news is, sometimes a mild heart attack acts as a warning and they can balloon out the arteries and make it all better.

Poor Uncle.

I just got off the phone will Bill. His spirit is good, and feels better than when he entered the hospital. No more smoking for good, " I now have the incentive to quit ".
The beer makes things tolerable for now.Like Rusty said, they will make a determination, for his treatment on Monday.

Glad someone called today.

I don't want to pester him, just let him rest up. Then I get to be a nervous wreck. So thank you Floyd.

Incidentally, the reason I met Pala was a flying trip to Washoe Med because MY mom tried to sneak in and have an angiogram then an angioplasty without telling me. Then the hospital couldn't get her for some reason and they called me and let the cat out of the bag.

They sometimes put a little 'stint'in, kind of a springy mesh plastic tube to hold the thing open and keep it from closing back up.

My grandfather smoked for 50 years and quit for good on the day that the docs showed him a spot on his lung. Since then, he says he hasn't really missed it.
The good news is: a cardiologist I know says that most people who quit after something like this, really don't go back.
Hope you're feeling better, Uncle.
