Is it common practice to chamfer the guard too, or just the handle? And is it impossible to do after glue up? Hard to find much on the subject and search is giving me errors. Thanks

If the guard and handle are the same height you can chamfer both. Don’t over do it, all you need to do is just break the sharp edges. If your handle is bigger, only do the handle material. Two or three layers of masking tape on your guard will not only protect the surface but also give you a good indication of how much bigger the handle needs to be. I would not recommend chamfering after glue up. Do a dry fit, glue when you are happy.

Use two small aligment pins to position the bolster/guard and handle.
I think it looks better if your handle is slightly thicker (ca 2layers of tape) and only the handle is rounded.
Some 600 or so sandpaper is enough to round.
Like sayed before, don't overdo it
