I was talking with one of my good friends today and we got to talking about things that had been passed down to us from great grandparents and grand parents. Which brings me to my question, what do you consider to be more of an heirloom to pass from generation to generation? A nice watch, firearm, or knife. Looking forward to the replies.

My first answer is the Farm.

However knives and guns passed down are the things a guy values most. I have a few of each.

I didn't vote because for me, they all would be valued heirlooms.

All of the above including quilts, furniture and other antiques would be considered heirlooms in my family. The most common one however has been firearms.

I vote NOT for the watch. Old watches are mechanical nightmares that in many cases aren't even very good at their only function. Watches used to be prized because they were relatively expensive due to all the labor required to make a decent one. Almost any modern watch outclasses every older one except maybe in ornamentation and sentiment. I know some people are really into expensive watches, and that's fine with me, but I totally don't get it.

Guns are still just as good as when they were made, but I can't really carry Grandpa's 12 gauge around with me most places.

Knives, on the other hand, can fit into your pocket and do just as good a job as cutting tools as ones you can buy today. The only sentimental objects from departed family members I routinely have on my person are pocket knives---so I vote for them.

As far as Im concerned a gun's use precludes it from being something that I would personally want to receive as an heirloom. A knife, well that would be better I suppose.

But honestly Id much, much prefer a swiss time piece to a weapon/tool.

Any would be great. A knife would be useful longer, though. I would think so anyway. No moving parts... and not likely to get outlawed in the future. ;)

Damned commies coming for our watches!

All of the above. Whatever is the most popular answer my kids are going to get some good stuff when I keel over.

Any of the above. My favorite heirloom is a safety razor that belonged to my great grandfather. It went straight from him to me, though. It was one that he had used while he was at my family's camp, and when he passed away it came to be mine.

all of the above. i have so far been given two of my great grandfathers butcher knives. the boning knife is the sharpest knife i own. from my dad's side i was given by my nanny her grandfathers grouse foot that he used for a kilt pin, which is what i use it for.

A nice watch? It would require expensive servicing and still not even keep time all that well. I don't like the aesthetics of old watches all that much, and I like the features of modern watches.

A nice knife? I know this is BLADEforums, but I think I might be too concerned with losing it to carry it much.

My vote is for a firearm. Of course, I'm a bit of a gun person, and I'm lucky enough to live in a state favorable to gun owners. Also, there's something special about American steel and walnut that's very quickly being lost in this age of injection molded plastic.

knives all the way. my great uncle-that was a navy seal-gave me his "seal" knife and it is my most prized possesion.
