Helko splitting maul/axe

I wish the classic had a guard, but it still looks to be of decent quality. It's always a hard choice between affordable and spending the money for a Gransfors.

I'd think that depends on a man's idea of affordable. At around $100 I hope for a 9.5 out of 10 regards overall quality of the haft, the hang and the tempering. The vintage Plumb axes I seem to keep playing around with are just terrific with all 3 of those qualities. Get yourself a nice piece of lumber for the handle and it's no trick to come in under $50 with something that will serve better than most anything made today.

I do apologize though...I've never handled a Gransfors at the wood pile. A couple from friends while camping have had them but all that was needed those times were easy splits or feather sticks...nothing that would tell me if they held stock during the rough and tumble. Very nice looking, classy even, but whether that is worth the extra coin I really am not qualified to have an opinion.

Long and short? If you like what you see then it's worth whatever you're willing to pay. Please do let us know what you settled on and how it performed. If you don't mind, include the size and type of hardwood you had a go at. Also remember, it's all worthless without pics ;)
