For you guys believing that laws may be a bit too prohibitives in USA, I would like to tell about the laws about knives in the country where I live!
I live in Denmark (europe) in a civilized democratic country where if you want to posses a knife with a blade over 4" , you have to ask for a permit to the autority.Yes guys, a permit to have the right to posses a knife over 4"!!!
All folders knives with "one hand opening" are prohibited and u can't even possese one!
Carry a fixed blade is unlegal exept for Hunting and fishing,if this blade is over 4" you have to carry your permit with you!
If you want to carry a knife for Every Day carry, the only knives you are aloud to carry is a folder, this folding knive can't have a blade over 3" and it can't be a folder with "one hand opening"...
ENJOY!!!
Imagine how it is to live here!!!!

Or at least move to Germany where fixed blades regardless of size are legal to own and carry almost everywhere, double-edged blades included (as long as you're 18+) - pushdaggers are the sole fixed blade exceptions from this rule. Pushdaggers, balisongs, gravity knives and certain automatics are banned over here.

Gee whiz, I'd love to carry a big knife.
Even if I did need a permit.
That's a no-no here in ohio.

Where did you hear that? All the Ohio laws I've read fail to mention blade length. They do prohibit gravity knives, balisongs, switchblades etc. , but the general laws are based on intent.
I carry fixed and folding knives in the 3"-4" range all the time openly, without any comments. Haven't tried to go bigger, but I didn't think it was illegal.

all this from the land of Vikings! same in Japan I hear...land of Samurais! I don't know what to say - it's the same here in Singapore. Not an offense to carry any knife in particular (except daggers, swords, balis, autos, flick knives) but the police could just charge you for having an "offensive weapon". I wish they viewed knives as tools, not weapons.

Exactly!
The most funny is that one hand opening or not, a knife is a knife...It is unlegal to carry an Everyday carry knife over 7 cm or a fixed blade, but there is shop at every streets where u can legaly buy the bigest cooking knives!
Funny...It's legal to carry an axe! but not a knife!Skilled hands can do quiet some damage with a screwdriver!Wich is legal to carry...
But god there is no vikings anymore in denmark! they all moved to norway and sweden!

Hi Oliver!

I'm danish too, so I know full well what you are talking about!
baraqyal: getting the laws changed? It's not that much of a democracy!:D

As to the insane knife laws, I'll say that most of the knifenuts I know, are taking them with a grain of salt and generally carry whatever they like!
And it has to be said too, that I have never been been asked by the police to empty my pockets!(Thank God for that, BTW!:D)
OK, I haven't been asked by the police to show anything but my drivers license.

The laws of this country tends to p*ss me off too (don't even get me started on gun laws!), but we do actually enjoy a lot of freedom here.
We generally don't have metaldetectors anywhere, it's very seldom that "ordinary" people are asked to empty their pockets by the police.
And as long as a person looks and behaves resonably "normal" and doesn't carry an illeal knife in plain view, there shouldn't be any problems.
Of course we have the total morons within the plice, who will bust a guy carrying a folder with a 2,8" blade since it can only be 2,75".......nothing to do about that, I guess they are everywhere!

Please note, that I am in no way defending our stupid laws, just saying that they probably are there to stay and us knifenuts have to work around them if we wanna stay in the country!:D
(I do, since my wife won't move....!)

And of course you can always use this one: "But officer, I swear that I only have this here Becker Magnum Camp as a kitchen knife and I simply forgot to take it off my belt when I left home this morning!" A BK&T Magnum Camp is a kitchen knife, right???:D

Thanks god a guy thinking like me in Denmark!
yeah...as u said...don't talk about guns law...I just had a "no" from the ministery to buy a new gun because "I have ONE 9mm and ONE 357 mag so I can't buy anymore..." they said...
Actualy a friend of mine was charged by the police because he had a one hand opening knife! They came to control his "gun safe" (the guy is hunter...not criminal at all!) and in the gun safe there was such a knife! It's true that danish police is not so hysteric about cheking peoples pockets, but once I had to show them the Buck 112 I wear on my belt!Lucky for me it was a Buck 112 made specialy from buck for the "danish market" so it was ok!
I just feel it's sade to feel guilt or be criminalized each time normal citizen meet cops and are carying a simple spyderco or benchmade!
I hope one day all the hunters from Denmark and people liking knives could join together and make an association to make legal at least the possession of this kind of knife!
Unfortunately in all the society around the world,to admit you collect knives or just like knives as hobby is like admit you have a kind of psychological problem!People right away start thinking "is he a psycho?"...At least that's the way it is in Europe...And like you say budy...Don't even start on the guns law!
But Hey! I'm french so why don't we start a revolution here in denmark to make it legal!

Hi Oliver

Indeed!:D Good to know we are not alone with our thoughts!
Oh yeah, you became the victim of another totally outlandish law; "there is no sporting need for any shooter to have more than two handguns in 9 mm/0.38"!
Pure BS! I shoot IPSC and I could find a bunch of reasons to have more than two!
Just another perfect example of one of our own sportsshooting organisations (in this case DDS) just bending over backwards to satisfy ignorant politicians who have no idea what they are talking about!
Seems like only DSF (Dansk Sportsskytte Forbund) will stand up for the rights of Danish Shooters!

Sorry to hear your friend got busted. As soon as they find a one hand opener, your done! I think the fine is around $ 160,- if you just have one at home and around $ 790,- if you happen to be carrying this evil, dangerous weapon around......and it doesn't matter what bladelength when it's a one hander! A Spyderco Mouse will do just fine! Totally friggin, bl**dy insane!
Did he loose his gunpermit over it?

I have stopped carrying anything openly on my belt and only carry folders in my pockets (where the police has nothing to do unless they have a search warrant or "probable cause" like being in a street/bar fight, threatening people, looking like a gang member, that sort of thing.

>I just feel it's sade to feel guilt or be criminalized each time >normal citizen meet cops and are carying a simple spyderco or >benchmade!
You are SO right!

Yep, it's time to make a revolution, all right!:D Oooops I forgot....I think that's forbídden too........!

J-man: Dunno about Oliver, but I don't have the option of moving at this time!

As for the 4" law, it only applies to "outdoors" knives!
Even more bizarre: (theoretically) you can go into a shop, buy a 10" kitchen knife, drop it in your bag and transport it home. Get caught, no problemo - it's a kitchen knife!
Buy a Fällkniven S 1 (5,1"), drop it in the bag and take it home without a permit, get caught and you just landed yourself a $ 470,- fine and registration as a criminal!!! (if the policeman is fanatical enough!)

The blade permit is free and the police is forced to give it to anyone who hasn't got a criminal record, BTW.
It allows the possesion knives over 4", swords, sabres and such for collectors and for decoration, but does not allow one hand opening folders, auto's, gravity knives, balisong's, etc.
Nor does it allow carrying knives in public places, but it's OK for going fishing, hunting, scouts, etc. when engaging in these activities!

Hey! what about to make a new association like a NRA for knives freaks like us?
