I've been asked about sheaths for the HR and ASH-1, so thought I would post some more pictures of my new HR. Any excuse ;)

My original HR fit very well in a Scrap Yard 6" sheath I picked up on the exchange a while ago. The new ones fit even better, due to the magnum grips. These sheaths are nicely made (as one would expect) and really excellent value for money! I wish I could import a few without the (very) high international shipping charge and subsequent import duties and tax. That takes the edge of the bargain. Anyway...

The SY sheath is billed as 6", but takes the 6 7/8" blade of the HR perfectly. Being a Busse family sheath, the liner (of some sort of transparent plastic) is good bit bigger than the Spec-Ops liners and has plenty of width and depth to accomodate the HR, with room to spare.

The internal cross section of the liner is 1/4" x near-enough-2", externally it's about 7/16" x a-little-over-2". The liner is a folded-over sheet, with the overlapping parts glued. I imagine it would be quite easy to fabricate a different-sized liner if required, to accomodate, say, an ASH-1. I don't know if this liner could be softened like kydex; I haven't had call to try it and don't want to wreck it when it fits my HR so well already.

The only glitch with these sheaths is the handle retention. The strap, which is stitched onto the sheath and is fastened by velcro, is in the wrong place for these knives. It fastens around the swell in the middle of the handle - the widest part. With my original (standard grips) HR, that means it doesn't really hold it well unless I put undue effort in to fasten it tightly.

If I move about too actively, the knife can jump up and down in the sheath. Not really a problem - I don't make a habit of running (it's against my principles) and even if inverted, the knife can't fall out because the guard stops it going through. But still an issue that might be of concern for some folks.

The Magnums on my Ganza HR's, while even thicker at the handle swell, are gripped better and more easily by the strap. These are definately held more securely and, while they could still move in the sheath, it would take a lot of jumping up and down to do so. And that is well against my principles!

Finally, what we've all been waiting for, the pictures...

Rick - British Pork!

Very interesting, thanks for these details and congrats on your new knives. I await some custom versions and might order one of these types of sheathes. By the way, saying "British Pork" leads me to chuckle....best darned breakfast pork sausage the world can offer is certainly British ! I cut into one once and it pissed grease and ruined a new tie ! Moral of that story......When in England (or should I say Britain) allways tie up after breakfast ...:D

Great shots . Had to post my HellRazor sheaths , Kydex , balistic nylon , and leather . My # 1 Blade HR . Okuden , Spec-ops , Chuddy Bear Leather .

Great kit wired45, thanks for posting. I'm trying to source a black spec-ops right now for mine.

Thanks for the pics; I've been considering sheath options for my new HellRazor. What are the back of those sheaths like?

Rick, great report and pics.

Seems like it shouldn't be too much trouble to pick out the threads on that retention strap and move it down.

I've just taken a quick pic - see below :) Also included the spec-ops sheath for comparison.

I've just noticed that you can only just make out the belt loop in these pics, but I've put my camera away now. If you look on the back of the SY sheath, about level with the studs on the spec-ops belt loops, you can just see where the nylon is folded backwards and stitched, to make the primary belt loop. All the straps are just extra attachment points.

As I said earlier, it's an excellent sheath for the money. A real bargain if you don't have to pay overseas shipping etc.

Agreed. The webbing strips on the back would make stitching it back on a little awkward, but it's certainly do-able.

I've just ordered three spec-ops sheaths as I found a supplier who can ship them to me at the same total cost to me as the Scrap Yards would be. So I'll leave the Scrap Yard sheath alone and find something that fits it properly. Hey, there's an excuse to get a Scrap Yard knife, if I ever needed one :D
