Helle Knives

Helle knives are nicely constructed and their blades are outstanding, laminated with harder steel in the middle and stainless on the outside for protection.

I got a Fjellkniven model and love it. Takes a wicked edge and holds it well and the handle fits me just right. Used it to field dress and skin a deer and it performed great. A very nice knife for the money.

My first knife ever is a Helle, ~ 50years old ! One year ago I bought a Helle blade of laminated stainless , and put a handle on it . A good way to cutomize a knife. On that one I had to regrind the tip since it was to obtuse an angle.

Helle makes a really good knife! I have a Fjellkniven and a Nying, and like both very much.
They take a very good edge, make nice camp duty knives.

lostcaveman,
you are looking for an outdoor survival knife. You're interested in different manufacturers. Do you really have to start eight threads on the subject?
One "looking for a wilderness survival knife" thread would suffice, you can ask questions about different companies in one thread, since you're inquiring about one knife you want to buy, right?

I have Brakar:

I have review on my site for Futura

and Safari (no pics). They are very sharp and holds edge well and it is easyer to sharpen because layer of hard steel is thiner, they much more corrosion resistannt and tougher - I mean not brittle.

A bit about survival. You may check Norway is in the north of the Euope - kiund of cold weather there (almost like in Russia). And they are not surviving there - they living there and living there comfortable! This is kind of knives - for comfortable living in "surviving enviroment". There are generations of norwegians behind this design.

Only problem I know - it is handmanufactured (not handmade) so I saw some reports on poore assembling quality in russian forums - mine are fine I bought them from Ragnar http://www.ragweedforge.com and they are fine, but keep this in mind.

Thanks, Vassili.

Vassili, the Brakar looks pretty nice! I have been torn between that one and the Harding for my next one...

Nice fish, too!

I have the Helle Millstone, a gift from wife. It's a very nice knife, and I love it!

You might also consider a Karesuando if you like the style.

Good Luck,
-Bob

Also Brusletto, but it is onlu Helle making stainless laminated blade (in Scandinavia, Japan making laminated blades for Fallkniven NLs, U1, etc).

Thanks, Vassili.

I have a Helle Leif Erikson Commemorative model that I bought from Ragnar at Ragweed Forge a couple of years ago that I use quite a lot as a utility knife for my Dark Ages living-history roles. It fits excellently with the Viking and late Anglo-Saxon periods and can be used, more or less, in earlier periods. The blade is a laminate and it takes a wicked sharp edge, as has been noted. I have even shaved with mine, once, just to see if I could. :D It's an excellent, if simple, knife and I see no reason to think that any of their others would be less.

I also bought a Brusletto Telemark knife from Ragnar more or less in commemoration of the Nordsk Hydroelectric Raid that kept the NAZIs from developing a nuclear capacity. They are also excellent knives and a bit fancier while still very much in the simple Nordic pattern.
