Helle Temagami or Utvaer?

I recently pickup up a Helle Eggen and I really really like it. Sure, it's not a TEOTWAWKI or Post-Apocalyptic bushcraft knife with its little rat tail tang, real wood handle, and its without some modern super steel that takes specialized sharpening skills to maintain the edge. However, it is a thing of beauty and an excellent choice for normal everyday needs IMHO.

That being said, I'm thinking about and looking at the stainless versions of the Temagami and Utvaer. Who owns and uses one or both of these? How do they compare to each other? In general, they appear to be similar but, I wonder about the handling of the 3/4 tang Temagami being better than the full tang Utvaer. I tend to think the laminated steel Temagami is 'slightly' better than the 12c27 Utvaer but, not enough to sway me one way or the other. I don't see myself using either knife in freezing temperatures, much less above the Arctic Circle, bare-handed so handle insulation for my hand is not really a factor in my decision.

For general backpacking, use around the house and yard, and similar 'normal' activities, which would you choose and why? Have you actually used one?

I'm not opposed to considering other knives but, the beauty of the Helle knives is hard to beat right now in a world of TEOTWAWKI knives with specs built to fend off the Zombie hordes or survive some global calamity. Carbon Fiber, Micarta, blade coatings, etc. have their place in pocket knives and fixed blades today but, so does a classic old school knife from days long past. ;)

TIA,
Sid

Helle knives are beautiful, no doubt about it.

After looking at both models, I'd pick the Temagami. Why? I prefer full tang over partial. I don't like hollow pins in a fixed blade. I like the blade length of the Temagami vs Utvaer. $35 bucks cheaper. Not sure why the Utvaer is more expensive.

Hard to beat 12C27. I don't know why Helle even bothers with laminated stainless blades. (Their high carbon laminated steel blades are another matter. Those do make a difference.)

Helle knives are great, my Fjellkniven has been out and about with me since 2003 and has never let me down. The only thing I don't really like is the sheath...

As for Temagami vs Utvaer I can't really help you, both look great. If you're after the classic Helle look though the Temagami is closer imho.

Good luck with your decision and make sure you post pictures of your new knife!

And I think this thread needs pictures, so here goes ;)
