1) I have a few questions about wood scales in general. This is the first knife I've ever owned with wood scales. They are beautiful and elegantly shaped. But they feel pretty slick too. What if anything can be done to improve the grip on wood scales? I assume some very light sanding. Which scares me to be frank. The wood looks so beautiful. But I also thought of grip tape. But that would be an abortion on this beautiful knife imho. Soaking it with BLO? Wax of some sort? IDK. Any help gladly appreciated.
2) Secondly, this knife is alot smaller than it looks in the pics. I have small hands. And the reviews said it was best for small hands. But that rear ridge hits my pinky finger almost in the middle or slightly less. Make sense? My hand is too wide for the blade - just slightly.
I'm almost scared to touch this wood. I've reshaped things before. But not one off pieces of an almost $200 knife. What procedure would you use to reshape it? Tools etc. And how could I get it to look as nice is it does now? This almost sounds like something I'd like to pay someone to do. Any recommendations?
3) Any recommendations for a company that can make custom micarta scales for a Helle Utvaer? And install them? It would be great if I could replace the scales with micarta that was shaped to accommodate a slightly larger hand.
I really do like this knife. If I squeeze my hand close it does fit within the top and bottom of the handle. But when looser my hand is wider than the handle is long. And that rear ridge hits me just about in the pinky or the side of the pinky. Something maybe I'll have to get used to.
I wish they would have made this a 5" blade and 5" handle. Or whatever would be good for my hand size. But I guess this is what you get when you buy off the shelf rather than having something custom made. Wish I could afford that.
