Hi all this is my first post. I found this site because I need some help. My dad got me a knife for christmas about 4 years ago and I really loved it. Now I lost it and can't find another one like it to save my life! The reason for this post is to see if anyone can give me a model name of it or a place to find the model name.

The knife was a gerber and cost about $40. I know that origionally walmart sold them. It was a mid sized folding knife that opened very smooth. The blade was a polished stainless and half serrated and had a post on it for one-handed opening. The handle was a wood handle with about 3 or 4 holes.

Any help would be very appriciated ideally i am trying to find one on ebay or an online store. THANKS!!!

Welcome aboard BF. There is alot of information about knives here, my advice is to read through the forums. There is probably more knife information here than you will ever find anywhere else. I am sure that in a few months you will have a few nice knives in your collection as a result of BF. Enjoy.

Howdy 'Ol Bud, I'm sure if you look on this forum long enough you'll find what you are looking for;) I myself used to be a Gerber man (many moons ago) before I did some research on knives & blade material. Then one Christmas a good friend of mine got me a real knife, my first SPYDERCO (progrip) :D
For the $$$ you are going to spend on that Gerber, I would get a Spyderco Endura or Delica, both are AWSOME knives for the $$$ also check out Kershaw LEEKS these a nice little knives ! Do a little research & get ready to spend some money:D once you start, you can't stop at just one

I also don't want to muddy the waters, but the Gerber that was purchased four years ago likely isn't the quality of the one you'll find now. Although some look the same, Gerber has reduced its steel quality almost across the board. If this weren't bad enough, they kept their prices the same or even increased them. In short, Gerber is now junk.

My recommendation would be to zip over to Smokey Mountain Knife Works and get your name on their catalog list. They have good prices on a variety of knives, but you should also probably stick around this website and make sure you buy a knife that will best suit your needs. There are many quality knives around, but tastes vary. And there are many more crap knives around.

One of the first knives I got was the one below. I think Gerber at one time had one that looked much like it. This one was made under the Winchester name. Anyway, the handle was far superior to the blade! Ugh!

The Gerber knives are on the right.

I wouldn't dicount all Gerber knives. They still make some good ones. However it pays to be a smart shopper.

Well, let's put it this way: Gerber makes it tough to be a smart shopper. They don't list the
steels they use in blades anymore (you have to go to the fine print in charts buried in their
catalogs). And once you go and look in those charts, it's just amazing what garbage they're
using now as blades.

There are some people on this forum who think AUS8 is garbage (not a whole lot, but some).
Well, AUS8 is a "miracle steel" compared to what they're using in knives like their Paraframe.
400-series steel means that technically they can use anything they want. You can buy about
four Maxams for what you'd pay for one 400-series Gerber, and the Maxams are probably better
knives. M-Techs and Smith & Wessons would beat them hands down, too, IMO.

I saw a Gerber boot knife recently that was almost a carbon copy of the Smith & Wesson $17
one. It was almost $50!! I'd buy two S&Ws and a pizza before I'd buy the Gerber! I mean,
doesn't capitalism demand that as you go from quality to garbage that you at least lower the
datgum price?

The Gerber Freeman goes for about fifty bucks and is billed as having "surgical
stainless steel." Anyone want one of those? The beadblast blade's about three inches. Don't
know whether it comes with fleece or not. Then there's the Applegate-Fairbairn Covert,
which has a 4-inch 154CM blade and FRN handle, and that goes for a hundred and five
bucks. Seems Gerber has a somewhat inflated opinion of its products. But if you want one,
best get one now; next year the blade may be 440A and the knife may go for $150.

This is all hard on new folks to the forum, but if I were just getting into knives, I'd want
someone to tell me the awful truth. I've still got several Gerber AR 3.00s from better days.
I used them as gifts when I got a good price on them. Who knows, they may become
collector's items.

very wise words indeed, i have only 3, a hinderer, a freeman folder and a little assisted opener decent quality but the freeman and the hinderer are much better quality but then again they cost more. If a guy likes gerber and is happy with a gerber then go with it. If it fails him then he'll move on to another brand. To each his own i suppose.

Thank you all very much! Unfortunately the knife i am looking for is not one of the freeman or winchester, and also i have been up and down the whole gerber site. The gerber site regretably does not include retired knives.

I am looking for this knife not because it is a great knife, but it has a little sentimental value.

Talking about favorite knives, i bought a spyderco "S" which is my favorite and never leaves my side. Ranking up there is also a benchmade i have and a kershaw chive. The spyderco is still sharp from the factory after 6 months and perfect except for one little nick from an emergency roadside motorcycle repair... haha And of course my work horse the leatherman wave. Also just bought an old ka-bar i am cleaning up a little.

Thanks for the help!

I recently bought a new Gerber Gator which is clearly stamped 154CM on the blade. This is darn close to the sharpest knife I have ever seen. One heck of an adge and it keeps it for a long spell. I also have a Freeman which is also a pretty darn good knife.

I have a lot of Gerber knives probably 25 or so. Most of these are older Gerbers but the Gator seems to me to still be a fine knife for the money.

As far as new knife nuts, I wouldn't jump on any brand without trying a few first. Each person has or will form their own idea about what they expect from a knife.
