I got my Schrade 881 out of the display case and started carrying it. It's starting to grow on me. I can't remember when I bought it. Does anyone know what year(s) this knife was made? On the tang (is that correct?) is says Schrade, N.Y. USA, 881. On the side of the knife it say Schrade in a small shield.

Thanks,

Steve

Welcome to the forum, Steve!

Up until the mid to late seventies, Schrade had three main series of knives, Old Timers, Uncle Henrys, and open stock. Your 881 was an open stock pattern that goes back quite a few years, but to answer your question, the Schrade tangstamp was changed from Schrade-Walden in mid 1973, and the 881 was last listed in 1986. So your knife was made between 1973 and 1986. Glad you decided to give it a try. Those 1095 carbon steel blades are hard to beat!

Are there reference books available? Not pure price guides but something with reference stuff also.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve, welcome to our forum!

In all due modesty, we here are the main reference for Schrades. As of your joining us, we are one member stronger, wiser, better. In time you'll be giving us information, and that info may spring from a question you ask us. Making us learn to find the answer.

Here is the best site showing Schrade photos:

Also check out the 'Sticky' thread at the top of our forum.

Books:

Older Schrades? (Schrade Cut and Schrade-Walden)? I liike the book by Jim Sargent, American Premium Guide to Pocket Knives Identification and Values. About 60 pages on those knives.

There is a reprint available of the Schrade Cut catalogs of the late 20's and 30's. It was published by AG Russell in 1971.

For Old Timers and Uncle Henry's, the book by Robert Clemente A Catalog History of Schrade Knives, available from here: majormarket@charter.net can't be beat.

Best general knife collecting book: Levine's
guide to Knives and their Values, 4th edition
by Bernard Levine

The book shown below, authored by one of our members, is the last word on Schrade automatics (switchblades)

What did I forget here, other members? I'll modify this list as per new information and repost it in the Sticky.

Phil

Goins and Voyles? A lot of books have tidbits about Schrade knives. The Russell reprints are very handy, and not impossible to find.
