Hello! I just started looking into knives because I want to get a high quality folder for a friend. From the research I've done, I've decided I want to get something either from the William Henry Evolution, Amber, or Black and Tan series, or an Emerson Blackbird, or a Chris Reeve knife. Does anyone out there have any opinions on these knives? Which knife would you rather get? I would really appreciate any input. Maybe someone has an alternative suggestion? I do want to stay in the under $225 range. Thank you so much :)

I'm not familiar with the Emerson Blackbird, but I know for a fact that unless you buy a used knife, Chris Reeve knives are out of the question if you want to stay under $225. I think that a carbon fiber William Henry Lancet or Spearpoint is a great knife and they can be had for well under $225 if you look around on the internet.

If you're looking for any new friends, where do I send my resume? ;)

Anyway I like the William Henry line for daily carry use. If you need a combat or tactical knife, go with the Emerson. The WH is really a thin and sexy knife, while the tacticals are built to work hard. I would get one of the Evo series. Hell, get two and keep one for yourself. BTW, welcome to BF.

You may be able to find something for sale on the Forums from CRK in your price range, but $225 may be tough :( ...give it a try though...ya nver know!!

The William Henry's are nice pieces, so it sort of depends on your buddy's usage needs.

I just wanted to add that he will be using this knife ALOT - he does masonry and landscaping work. Plus I know he always keeps a folder with him. Thanks for the answers I've gotten so far and for the warm welcome :). Y'all are great! I will be really happy if anyone else wants to add in his two cents worth, too. I am leaning toward the William Henry Amber series lancet or spearpoint right know. What do you think? Will they hold up to heavy duty work or do they just look pretty? :)

I would NOT suggest a William Henry for the above kind of work......But in the price range you are looking in you have quite alot of super choices. I am not going to make a suggestion as you know your friend, I do not, but in that money range your choices are many.....Good luck and Do you NEED another friend?:( wolf

According to the Chris Reeve website you can get either a Moutaineer I ($185), Shadow III ($185) or an aviator ($205) in your price range. I don't personally own one, but I've talked with others who do, and they stand up to some hard use. These are fixed blades tooled from a single piece of steel so they have no weak joints. Don't know about masonry, but I have done some carpentry work where one of those may have been handy, especially the aviator with the saw teeth. Just my two cents. Good Luck.

Did you actually ask if anyone on this forum would have an opinion on the knives you mentioned?

Unless you can find a nice used CRK folder you will have to spend more than $225.00. Even a used small Sebbie in good shape will cost you more than $225.00. If you are willing to spend the money then I would highly recommend these knives.

For under $200.00 I would recommend the W/H knives but not as hard working knives. They are more of a gent's folder.

I do not know the Emerson so can not give an opinion.

BTW, welcome to the forums. It's great to have you aboard.

Check out the Benchmades for a hard use folder, jvfancy. The AFCK, 710 Axis lock, or the Pinnacle (a Sebbie-Lite) would all work great and at a price a lot closer to $100 than $200. Your friend would not be disappointed in the quality or performance of these designs. Even better, hang on until the D2 AFCK Axis is unveiled and get one for yourself, too. :)

Welcome to the forums jvfancy.

I think donovan had a good idea, a BM Pinnacle. A poor mans Sebenza.

I've never had the oppurtunity to handle or even examine a Blackbird since it's so new, from what I hear it's basically a thinner, G10 version of the highly popular and sucessful Raven, and since it is a universal rule that all Emersons ROCK! I would feel pretty confident buying one, the only reason i've yet to buy an Emerson is I wanna handle a few more and buy the perfect one for me :)

You might consider the Spyderco Viele: very dressy, yet a solid work knife. The Benchmade Pinnacle is also an excellent choice, but is quite a bit larger, and has amore utilitarian appearance. I'm sure either knife would please your friend to no end! :D :D

Yeah, those high-end Spydercos and Benchmdades are great. You could buy him one and still have money to get one for yourself.

In the Spyderco Dept.: Viele, Lum Tanto, Lum Chinese, Plain edge Police, Military

In Benchmades: almost any of the Axis locks.

I don't have much experience with Emerson, so no comments on them from me.

Another line of knives in this range would be MicroTech, and Masters Of Defense. They make great using knives that look cool to-boot. Check out 1SKS for any of the above.

If your friend wants a dressier knife some of the Spydercos, and Benchmades will work, but the William Henry knives rule hands-down in this dept.

Good luck, and I hope your friend appreciates all the work you put into this decision.

BUCK Strider , great knife , and for masonry work , you will need a prybar that cuts . I don't think you can find a better knife for what your friend want's , and if he want's smaller , they come in two sizes .
