This is my first post to BladeForums, so hello to all!

Although I enjoy knives and have a few I am proud of (latest: mint Becker BK10 Crewman by Camillus) I was sent here from a shaving forum to ask about a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife. Here is a copy of the question I asked over there:

A while back I saw a show on TV that discussed Victorinox Swiss Army knives and it mentioned a new, improved, steel used in some of their knives. I believe the show said that the factory had to retool some things tio be able to stamp out and sharpen the new blades.

I located one of these knives on Amazon and had it in my "save for Later" list. I apparently deleted it since it is no longer there. I cannot find any mention of this in the Victorinox product descriptions I looked at -- and there are apparently hundreds to look at! I also checked other retailers specializing in Swiss Army knives and looked at the Victorinox web site as well.

Can anyone point me to the knife (or knives) I am looking for? I believe Amazon had two listings for two identical knives, except one was with the new steel and one without (the newer one being a bit more expensive).

Thanks!

Welcome to Bladeforums!

Do you recall what the pattern was? Vic is generally tight lipped about the exact steel they use on their knives. They do us x50crmov15 in their kitchen knives I believe.

By "pattern" do you mean what blades/tools it has? I don't remember that nor much else. Where I am coming from is wanting their new "2009 soldiers knife" and wondering just what steel the thing is made of. I knew (or thought I knew!) that there were two different steels being used and was hoping that the knife I was after was of the better steel. Since the new soldiers had to meet some new standards from the Swiss Army itself I suspect that a better steel might be part of that.

I decided to get it in any case so the question is slightly less important to me now, but it still gnaws at my curiosity!

I’ve searched and I can’t find any mention either here or other places of Vic switching steels on their soldier knife. If they have then you’ve got information I don’t. That being said there are people on these boards who know much more about SAK’s and the history of the soldier knife then me.
