Hello everyone. I've been reading a lot of threads here via google searches and figured I'd just join. I have been primarily engulfed in firearms, reloading, lead casting, and hunting for so long I haven't really put time towards blades. I've enjoyed knives my entire life(30yrs) but have recently been trying to step it up a bit. I thought i knew my way around a blade until I came here. After reading one member's "The Burr" (sharpening down to .25 microns and such) thread and others I feel like a little kid who lost his parents in the grocery store.

I'm rethinking my sharpening system at the moment. Currently i have two Lanskey systems that I don't really like/use and a rough/fine stone that I use primarily. The Japanese water stones are what I'm looking at but I'm gonna have to sell of some gun stuff first to make that happen. I'm thinking a 200, 800, 2000, and possibly a 8000 is what i will try to get. I was also considering just getting a paper wheel sharpening system. I would definitely appreciate any opinions on this manner. Also, if anyone has some good videos/tutorials about knife sharpening I would appreciate it if you could share them with me. I see so many different opinions on this topic and it's hard to determine what is the right way to go about things.

Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself and am looking forward to learning and enjoying blades with everyone here. Cheers!

Welcome to the forums! This forum has a huge wealth of info for anything to do with blades, and more. The biggest thing to watch out for here is your wallet. The more you look the more toys and tools you will find. Enjoy!

Oh I know how that goes. I've dumped tons of money into optics and firearm stuff over the years. Lord knows I need another expensive hobby like I need another hole in my head but what're ya gonna do lol.

Thanks for the welcome.

The more I'm reading I'm thinking it may just be cheaper and take less time to just get a bench grinder/buffer and then the Razor Sharp Edgemaking System and be done with it. That would be cheaper than a couple nice Japanese water stones. I'm just not sure if it would be as good. Back to research lol.

welcome!
don't take this wrongly,
but it's only fair warning to all newbie's
to be prepared to max out your card each time you visit these forums. :-)

Check out the rather long thread on the Maintenance and Tinkering forum at the top is some "stickies". The one about "when your time is"..... is all you would ever want to know about the Paper wheel system, but were afraid to ask. I have the system with a Harbour Freight 6 inch buffer (about $40) and the wheels for a total cost of less than $100. Best money I have ever spent on sharpening equipment. If I had it to do over now after using this system for over 2 years, I would still go with what I have, with the possible exception of a variable speed buffer. The 3500 rpm is within the wheel mfg. range of operation, but some like the slower speed available on the variable speed machines. I have not found the higher speed a problem once I became used to it, and adjusted my technique for it. Good luck, and welcome to the forum's. Ask questions, and get answers, as there is a wealth of knowledge from the gang that hangs out on here.

Blessings,

Omar

Oh yeah, that's what lead me down the road to that system in the first place. I've read many of your posts in that thread. I ordered one of their sets last night :D. A grinder/buffer is my next purchase so your comment was well timed. I still my be a cheap ass and get the fixed speed as $40 had a nice ring to it. I'll probably dig around and see if i can find a variable speed one though first. Thanks for your response!

The only thing I wish the thread had was a video showing technique with the wheels. Great thread though.

Welcome!

My only advice: Avoid the basement (Whine and Cheese). It's where we keep the morons and neanderthals.
