I am a beginner starting with the rough stock removal method. I have chosen ATS-34 and a bowie design as my first project. The bowie has been ground and I need to harden and temper. I live on the East Coast and was referred to Paul Bos in CA. I was wondering if anyone knows an equal quality facility on my side of the country?
Next question: I read on a website ATS-34 is no good for creating a hamon? Is this true? Can anyone tell me the best Rockwell factor for camping use? The bowie is full 18" of stock with 5" handle. Thanks in advance.

If you are making a large ats34 camp knife, I would definately send it to Paul Bos. He has the best reputation in the business, and is reasonably priced. He is expecially reknown for his treatment of ats34. I have never seen a ats34 blade with a hamon, doesnt mean it is impossible, I don't know for sure. I know Paul Bos did some differential heat treating of ats34 a while ago, dont know if he still does.

You have been well advised to join this forum. I too am new to all this (about 6 weeks old now and still a Pleab). The fellows that frequent here are among the most enthusiastially helpful I have found.
I, as far as craftsmanship goes, come from a firearms background. No web firearms forums (that I have seen - there may be one somewhere) can touch these guys for outright helpfulness and a desire to advise those of us that know nothing yet of there craft.

I use Rc 56-58 as a working hardness on all of my bowies and other working patterns. It gives good edge holding and enough flexibility to avoid chipping.
