Hello, and question about Kershaw Boa "turbo"

Hello all, I've browsed here from time to time, but this is my first post on your board.

I'm more of a firearms guy, but deep down I've always recognized that everyone needs a good blade as well - the problem is, some new gun or gadget has always distracted me before I've settled on anything near a quality blade. I've only been carrying a knife for about a year now - a CRKT Mirage that I picked up new at a gunshow for like $10 (guy was selling a bunch of stuff 50%+ off). It has served me well, and has really taught me how handy it is to have a blade with you. However, I think it is time to upgrade a bit.

Being sort of a "gadget" guy, autos have always fascinated me. Unfortunately, I live in PA where carrying them is a nono. As such, I've taken an interest in the Ken Onion's speedsafe stuff that Kershaw manufactures. I've toyed around with the cheaper ones, but I think I want to get the Boa. However, a while back I read a post here from Ken that a new version of the Boa was out that was going to increase its speed by a good bit. The Boa was apparently the first production knife in the speedsafe line so they were a bit cautious at first. However, I haven't heard anything about it since. A search for anything like it here didn't find much beyond the original thread were it was discussed.

Does anyone know more about it, and when it will be released? On one hand, I would sort of be upset to have my first "real" knife be replaced by a "better" version of it shortly after I bought it, so I am hesitant to buy now. However, the last few days I've been thinking about trading up my Steyr SBS for a 700 LTR (arg, I need to make more money!) so on the other hand, I'm worried if I don't get something soon, I'll once again submit to the lure of the gun (and the infinite gadgets available to customize!) and it'll be another year before I think of dropping $100 on a knife. I know a $100 knife is small potatoes for most here, but that's like 3/4 of the cash for my Badger base for my new LTR to me, or almost a CZ52, or some new mags (can you ever have enough?)... Ooops, there I go again!

Thanks all,

Rocko

Making the Boa "snappier" might just be a change in production and not a release of a new model. The only way to find out for sure if they did it is to contact Kershaw, but don't expect a reply until next week as the crew is no doubt in Atlanta at the Blade Show.

Welcome to the forums, dude...

I'm pretty sure that the Random Task was the first in the speedsafe line. It won the knife of the year at the Blade Show...I think. Then came the Mini Task, Ricochet, the Whirlwind, the Blackout. The Boa was the first in the second round of speedsafes with the Avalanche (I think).

But that wasn't really your question so I'll get on with it...to be honest I hadn't/haven't heard anything about a Boa Turbo and I couldn't find anything about it on their website (or Ken Onion's site). I've carried my Boa for over a year and a half now as my primary EDC and I think you've made an excellent choice. When you compare the Boa "snap" to that of something like the Chive it's obviously going to be a little slower because of the bigger/heavier blade, but it's still quite good. The only reason I'd buy a newer Boa is if it came with a satin blade and a non-black handle.

I can understand not wanting to buy something that might get replaced, but there's nothing wrong with the first version--but I would probably follow stjames' advice and contact Kershaw about it.

I found one of the threads here that mentioned it:

Yeah, I don't particularly care for the black blades either - a little too "mall ninjaish" for my tastes, which is sort of strange considering I'm an "evil black gun" guy through and through. Ah well, such are the mysteries of life. Anywho, I figured I could always get the blade refinished later - or I presumed that would be an option, but I don't know much about knives. I always liked the satin bead-blasted finishes myself as well.

I'll shoot an email to Kershaw and post back the results.
