First off,

Hello everyone. I've been browsing the board for a couple of days and really think this is a great community of mature and helpful ppl and I'm glad to be part of it now!

Having said that, I have a couple of questions:

I just ordered a Kershaw E.T. with a plain edge and was wondering if anyone has any experience with this knife they could share.
I just had to get it since I was very intrigued by the design, but I was wondering if it was a good enough knife to carry every day and actually use it.
Here is a link to it http://www.kershawknives.com/knivesTools/images/ETRO.jpg

Second question is,
Does anyone know a link to a site that shows different ways to braid Paracord?
I know a couple of braids but that's it and I saw a bunch of pictures in here with different braids that I really liked and would like to be able to make myself.

Thanx,
Daniel

Your Kershaw E.T. should be plenty good enough for everyday use. Most Kershaw products are. Would you want to pry through a door with it or use it to attack a raging hippo? No.

Is it a gimmicky knife? Sure. But as long as you like it, that's all that matters.

I've played with several ETs and am pretty impressed. It's a good size, a little large for me, but for joe average, it's nice. I like the carabineresque feature. It's fun to play with, although in my short time with it, I didn't get comfortable opening it the conventional thumbhole way. I felt it wiggling in my grasp as the frame unfolded.

I guess it says enough that I went in to buy one, but unfortunately, the two they had had sigifnicantly off centered blades, so I just bought an Avalanche instead.

I have an ET and i really like it. Its dosen't get into the edc rotation all that much. But when i do carry it I like to clip it to a belt loop. My blade is perfectly centered but i have read complaints of off center blades. I have the one handed toggle open/close down pat. Just takes a little practice. Mine has sentimental value, since i sliced a huge gash in my thigh with it. Bled like a stuck pig, took several stitches to close the wound. The blade cuts flesh very well, lol, i never felt a thing. Here is a small vid that i found of the ET. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvT1khQ8z2k

Thanx for all the replies sofar.
I have one more question tho.
What do you guys use to sharpen your knives?

What do you guys use to sharpen your knives?

Welcome to the forums.

Edge Pro; Spyderco Sharpmaker; Free hand with Japanese Waterstones. I probably get my best and most consistent results with the Edge Pro, but it is also the costliest of the 3 "systems" I mention.

Under General Knife Discussion there is a forum "In the Toolshed". There are generally many sharpening questions posed there.

As well, here is a great link to read over a couple of beers: http://forums.egullet.com/index.php?showtopic=26036

I purchased an ET recently myself. While I have become capable of operating it using the toggle, I find that the ribbing on the frame digs into my finger rather uncomfortably, the machined edges are sharp. Although it is well made, as are most Kershaw products, I don't carry it much and wish I had spent the money on something else. The novelty of it sold me on it, but now I wish it were a more conventional and usable design.

Welcome to Bladeforums! :)

I got to play with an E.T. once.
(But he phoned the police instead of home & I got in a lot of trouble. )

Actually, I thought it was a weird little knife, but fun to manipulate. Not hard to learn at all -- not that I learned all the tricks. It did seem pretty high quality. I thought it would be flimsy or wobbly but it was a good solid grip.

1 more question about the sharpening tho (sorry for all the questions, I am very new to all this)
How do you sharpen a combo edged or serrated blade?
I can see how combos are useful in some instances and wouldn't mind having one, however I shy away from them because I can't see how the serrated part can be properly sharpened.

To sharpen serrations you can use shapening sticks, or the Sharpmaker.

With the "sticks" (sometimes called tapers), you just put it in the serrations and twist.

With the Sharpmaker you just slide the knife along the ceramic triangle's corner just like a plain edge, and it moves into the serrations.

Serrations are actually *VERY* easy to sharpen. Perhaps moreso than plain edges. People that think serrations are hard or impossible to sharpen just haven't tried any of the modern devices that make it very easy.

Get a Sharpmaker and the optional diamond triangles. Between using the jig and the stones freehand, you can sharpen any knife. Any shape. Serrations or not.
