Hi there from France,

I am a recent Uncle Bill customer. I Ordered recently a GS 18" and received it. The only comment I can make is WAO what a blade!
I admit I had not owned such a beauty before. I am normally more in the small blades, French carry options and children in small age oblige. I was impressed by my first sharpening, the thing is hard when attacked with a ceramic, and the chakma works fine too. Perfect, magnificient.

I am hooked now, and in line for a Chiruwa AK and a few Kagas Katne, coming soon, thanks Bill. What's the disease name?

A pain I cannot carry that kind of blade more easily in France (does not fit the "pocket knife description").

This is bad for my karma, I hate greed, even if I am not a total buddhist (but mostly similar) and I turn out being greedy on khukuries :).

Uncle Bill, you have a too wide choice and my wallet is too small!

Side question for the experts:
It turns out I found on a french site a damas khukuri made in Nepal:

http://www.couteaux-courty.com/cgi-...ction=view_product&productID=1023&category=53

Size 15", weight 13 ounces thickness 0.39".
So has anybody ever heard of damas or laminated steel khukuries?
Not that I am really willing to buy it, but I am interested in comments.

As a last word, thank you all in this forum, reading it has been entertaining, interesting and certainly instructive.
Now I have a HI, I Think i can post.

Peace & harmony,
/JM

Welcome to the forums...

I find that all my non khukuri cutlery seem small now. I was looking at an 18" GS for awhile now. :) Perhaps someday soon one will be in my grubby little hands.

Singularity,

Welcome to the Cantina!

The disease you asked about is HIKV, or Himilayan Imports Khukhri Virus. ... it is incurable, and most likely, from the sounds of your post, you have it :D ... welcome to our world :D:D:D

Oh, there ARE those (well, one) who contends that there isn't such a thing as HIKV, but everyone mostly lets him rant. He comes out late at night/early in the morning and plasters the board with anti-HIKV material before disappearing back into his cave :D

To take a guess at your question about the blade you posted, there was (I think) a laminated type of damascus steel being made in India at one time, which I heard was rather good, or even superior to other metals at the time. HOWEVER, I am no expert in metaluragy. .. I'll leave that to others here in the Cantina. ...

BTW. ... I cannot believe a 18" GS won't qualify for a pocket knife in France. ... I mean, if you push it down into the packet far enough. ... but just becareful of the chape. ... ack!

Alan

Welcome Sing!:) And Congratulations on your first HI khukuri!:)

I'm sure it won't be your last:D And might I say, nice choice of khukuri (but then again, I always say that cause I love them all;)).

I'm sure Uncle Bill will back me up when I say you're welcome to post as much as you like,no khukuris, one khukuri or thirty:D

Welcome to the cantina Singularity!

Thanks for the cool khukuri pic, folks round here can't get enough of them!

Do a word search of the forum using the word 'damascus'and you will find several interesting threads which discuss khukuris with pattern welded and wootz steel blades. You can just about learn something about everything here at the cantina if you look around enough and pry into the archives. Just watch out for somebody asking you to donate your khukuri for "research".

Welcome, Singularity:

You'll find the Cantina is one of those places where you don't need anything ( much ) to say to join in. Pull up a chair near the woodstove and prop your feet up. Relax a spell, and enjoy the company. Then when you feel comfortable enough around these parts, post and make a fool of yourself just like everyone else has done at one time or another.

Welcome to the Cantina Singularity!!!!:)

That's a really pretty little khukuri. Thanks for the pic.:) Would you please translate the price on it for us?

I agree with Dave in that it looks somewhat like a Chainpuri.
I'm wondering what the steel may have been crafted from, whether it's made from Yugo fenders or some decent high carbon steels?:)

Sing,

I forgot to mention that I love the scabbard with that khuk too. ... very nice...

Welcome to the forums. Yes, you definitely have HIKV. Just sit back and relax, in just a couple of hours the cave dweller will be here.

Hi Singularity,

That's a very interesting picture that you've produced... Three small tools it looks like... an awl or a chisel perhaps as the middle one? And a buttcap on one of them too it looks like. Very nice. I suspect some of the more financially flexible here might well be very interested in this, regardless of price. If you can afford it, my instinct says buy it! I'm no expert, like others here, it's just a feeling. I think everyone here loves to see pictures like this. I know I do.

You've found one of the friendliest places on the web here. I've only been here a couple of months, (and several khuks) but I already feel quite at home here. I hope to someday meet some of the forum inhabitants in person. You already now know Uncle Bill and HI products and the rest of the folks here are nice too. Welcome.

Ouf, back home and able to post again.
The #%$%^ firewall at my work filters all said "offensive" material, sex I do not care, but knives I do care. I have written my own mighty version of a bypass for this firewall, but then, it does not handle cookies well, so I could not register...

Re: ACStudios

HIKV is what it is! mmm, seems contagious. I am not sure I care about a remedial. :D

Re: CoalBlack

I suspected Wootz for a while, but extensive research on the web do not seem to confirm that. I guess the only option left for more information is to call them, which I will do, as I already dealt with these people and they are helpful (I also I talk french, and it helps).

I also suspect Wootz would have a more crystaline look, this looks rather layered.

Re: Dave K

Yep, looks like a chainpuri...

Re: Yvsa

Price would be 160 $ minus 20% of VAT as you are not in EUC + transport.
I have no idea of how much transport would be, but can try to ask if one feels like interested. As I said, I'll call anyway for info. Drop mail if you need help.

The trouble is that I will have to refrain buying it for myself! No No, if I do, my wife will use it to cut me! ;)

re: all
To all the others I do not address separately, thanks to all for the warm welcome.

As you like images here are some less impressive from the same site.

But these are way less interesting 400 and 440 mm sizes. (and they are not Hi's)

Uncle Bill, I hope yo do not mind my little diversion.

I think I am going to enjoy this forum.

I admit, I was bit amazed to see knife related content to be filtered at work the same way sex related content is. What a pervertion have I got there ! :)

Even worst since I got HIKV. :D :D

It must have been easily spreading, as one of my dreams is one day to become a knife maker.
Might take some time, but I'll get there.

Well, it will take me some time until I am a 1/1000 of these kamis in Nepal.

My next project will probably be to build a fiberglass/wood scabbard for my coming chiruwa.

I have to say, Uncle Bill that a big part of buying the Kuks from you has been the fact that you said you paid the guys right, and I am very much in favor of what is nowadays called Fair Trade or pay the right price. I think the world needs more like you. The interesting fact is that it is an upcoming trend .

Yes, I know everything is relative. I should have said righter. (that why there is that sentence at the bottom of my post). Semantic problem.

This said you are still the best payer for this job in Nepal, it seems.

Side talk about the first damas Khuk in the picture, the seller said I should not expect a much cutting blade as these knives are made for chopping. I did not bother talking about my GS Special ;) Confirmed the blade is layered damas.
