Hello everyone.

I am new to this forum and just wanted to introduce myself. I am In the Marine Corps and Currently stationed in Panama City Florida. I am an avid diver and can be found on the cave divers forum often. As most of the members on this forum I'm sure I sepnt my childhood running thru the woods with a huge knife hanging off my leg. I am constantly in the woods and am seldom without a knife on me.

I currently own

Swamp Rat ratmandu
emerson SOCFK
custom Rat-7
a couple of striders
and a bunch of old no name blades I picked up along the way.

I am aminly on the forum to learn more about the evolution of knives and to see if I can pick up a few of the old knives I used to have that I was foolish enough to trade over the years.

Welcome to Bladeforums. And thank you for your service. I am confident that you will find what you are looking for here.

Welcome. And it's great you enjoy the ocean (as I do). I'm no diver, but I love fishing. I've been to the area a number of times, including a TDY to Tyndall AFB. Panama City I must admit is a boring place (except for Spring Break). Anyways, that shouldn't matter much to you as you should be able to find many sunken boats, reefs and caves around. Make sure to pick up an H-1 blade from Spyderco and you'll be ready for anything :D.

Desptie hating computer I have become a bit of a forum junkie the past couple of years. I must say thus far I am very pleased to see the quality of people on this forum. Already I have offers on a couple of the knives I am looking for.

I dont care for florida to much. As an outdoor nut the heat is a bit much.

Thanks to everyone for the support.

For what it's worth I spent a week at in Myrtle Beach, SC with several hours a day spent at the beach and in the water. Carried a Spyderco in VG-10 even when swimming and it never showed any sign of rust. With a polished finish VG-10 is very saltwater friendly.

The reason I asked about FL is, I'm a Michigan native and have lived here all my life. I've learned a couple things.

1, Life is too short to spend it all in one place. You'll never know if another state suits you if you never try it.
2, Even the simplest tasks like pumping gas can suck when it's -5°F. (BTW, No one in FL has to pry their gas door open because its frozen shut.)
3, 65°F in January sounds pretty good to me.

I've been looking into the Tallahassee area and have placed it on my wish list for places to move to. Now all I need to do is find a job there. :p

thank you.

Don't get me wrong, florrida has plenty of wilderness if you fond of swamps and heat. You will find what little elevation florida has to offer in north florida. I my self prefer mountains and snow.

On the other hand you can't beat the diving.

this place is horrible for saving money. I have been active for two days and I have baught

gerber BMF
timberline Specwar
bk2
bk7

and have e-mailed members about custom sheaths.

adam0321,
I lived a few years in the Florida Panhandle. There is some interesting diving there (like a WWII Aircraft Carrier:eek:). If you need to cool off Vortex Springs is nice not very interesting but nice and a great place to introduce new divers. BP oil spill aside its a great area if you like seafood you just missed crawfish season but you are 2 months away from cooler/sane weather. Mid October through February is very comfortable.
Thanks for your service:thumbup:

The longer you are here, the more the heat will grow on you. Check out all the springs. I dive myself spent years exploring the caves around the gainesville area when I was in school there. Nowdays I'm too old for cave diving but I still love to dive the springs. Plenty of them all around the state. Plus the swamps will grow on you. I spend lots of time in the swamps. Watch out for moccasins. They are overly aggresive and like to drop out of the trees on you. Enjoy your time here, and thank you for your service to our great country.

I have been here for over 3 years. I am an instructor at the military dive school. I leave for okinawa in October. For 3 years. I am an avid cave diver and have dove the caves all over the state. In my opinion its the only good thing here.

Very cool.. they are great, the caves. 3 years ain't very long though. Takes awhile before your eyes open and the beauty of this state starts to rub on you. Too each their own though.

Have fun in asia, while your stationed there. Should be a good experience.

I have lived here all my life and haven't been anywhere else I would rather live. We have lots of humidity which is worse than the heat. And 65 F in north Florida during the winter is a heat wave. I have also had a lot of people from up north tell me our 30 F feels like the norths 5 F. Don't know if its the humidity again? It gets quite a bit colder than most people think, we just don't have the snow. There are also a lot of people. The last 10 years it seems like the population has exploded. It also seems like everyone decided to move to the country. Our rural areas have a bunch of people and its hard to find a place where you are far from others. It seems like many people have the idea to move to Florida. The only reason I would leave here is due to over crowding. I like to be able to get out in the wilderness and be alone and there aren't many places to do that anymore.

adam head northwest to the freeport, niceville, crestview area and you will find more woods to lay in than you cna shake a stick at. All the reservation around the Eglin AFB area is an outdoorsman paradise fishing, hunting, trapping, foraging.

You could head out, get lost, and live off the land forever. I miss the area, all I have up here where I am in Ohio is the dedicated camping spots in the state parks. Back home I used to head out in the woods and stayed in whatever spot looked good.
