Hi. I am new to bladeforums, and found it to be full of extremely knowledgeable people; so I registered. :D

I found it a little difficult navigating since I am completely new to all kinds of knifes, and I am thinking about my first purchase. I hope it is okay to ask members of this forum about where I should focus my research, because I was a little overwhelmed about the information populating these forums.

I think I am looking for an automatic / switchblade knife, but I am unsure of its naming. I want it to retract quickly, be very light, and used for cutting small things in the laboratory where I work (mainly opening boxes, but also general purpose). I need it to be as light as possible because the only place I have to put such a knife would be in my lab coat chest pocket. If it is too heavy, it is uncomfortable.

Also, I apologize if I am assuming switchblades are used for this purpose, but I was hoping to combine both of my needs into one. I was thinking of also using this knife as protection (god forbid it ever comes to it), since I can't safely operate firearms. Using my common sense, all I could come up with was it needed to be able to be seen and used extremely quickly (fast as possible). I would feel safer with something like this around.

I am only interested in quality knifes and accessories, but I believe I hardly have to mention such things in this forum. I have no ideas what brands I should be looking for, or even which knife I need for this purpose. Perhaps it would be better to get 2 knives, each for these different purposes? Could some kind member direct me to the specific forum, or the brands I should be looking into? I would really appreciate the help!! Thank you~

Welcome to the forum. There is an automatic knife and switch blade forum under knife related discussion. Microtechs are the only autos i own and they come in different sizes are on the higher price side. So check them out and look in the sub forum those people will likely know more than me.

Thank you, Topcatpt!! Thanks for your recommendations! I will definitely check out the subforum to learn more about knives!

Price is no object to me, if I can find something extremely useful~

In most places switchblades are illegal to carry, so you might be safer buying an assisted knife.

Bradley Alias - auto. Great knife, fairly light as well. Intimidating looking too...

First, I would make sure switchblades are legal in your area and that your occupation would allow them. If switchblades aren't allowed, I would check out some Speedsafe knives (not knifes) from Kershaw.
