Hi everyone! My name is Hunter ( yes, really :P ). Im new to these forums but I've been reading them for close to 2 weeks now, intrigued. Most of the questions I've ever had about knives I've been able to find a thread answering them. What a remarkable forum, this is like a dream come true for me. I've always loved knives and I collect them to some extent. Im only 18, so I havne't had time to really start up my collecting hobby yet. Money is hard to come by until I get a job. ;) Anyway, I love the atmosphere around here, very helpfull and courteous; hard to come by nowadays. I look forward to posting the multitude of questions I have in the forums and making friends with fellow knife lovers! -Hunter T.

PS.) I have a plethora of questions to ask, but I think I need to ask at least 1 to make this thread relevant.

Heres one to start out on a good foot: A question about Cold Steel's Kraton handles. I've never felt them, or really seen them up close, are they comfortable to the touch? or are they cheap feeling? I know some 'softer' handles tend to rip or tear after alot of use, or accidents. Thank you for your feedback!

it feels really rubbery and has alot of grip to it. Its soft yet still firm

welcome to the forums--the cold steel with rubber handles feels good in the hand and looks much better than the newer models.i have one with the plain edge tanto with san mai steel.really a well made knife.
if you're looking for one e-mail me and we'll work something out

Ah...so what about the Desperado? I've read several posts...the opinions seem to be kinda split..some like the unique curve and "egg" shape of the handle...I look at it, and to me it looks comfortable.....has anyone every held one? Do they feel odd?

Fireshaker, welcome to Bladeforums!

One thing we've all learned is, it's hard for someone else to say what's going to feel good in your hand. That's one of the problems dealling with virtual reality. Online knife stores may beat the brick-n-mortar for price, but they can't tell you how that knife will really look and feel to you.

So take what we say with a grain of salt! I'm terrible at this, because my hand seems to like almost any knife, including some that probably are uncomfortable for most people.

That said, I don't like the rubber handles as much as hard, and natural materials are better than artificial. Wood, bone, and stag tend to give a better grip under wet conditions. So how come I have so much metal and Zytel?? I never listen to my own advice ... :p

Hiya Hunter, any Newbie that has found the Search Function is welcome here.

Regarding your question, both of my Cold Steel knives, (Black Bear Classic & Trailmaster) have Stag handles. ;)

Two years ago, I was exactly where you are. 18 and owning one M16-14 and two SAK's. I came here to ask about a Cold Steel Triple Action with a dagger grind. Everything went downhill from there. Before I knew it, I had a "toybox" full of knives. I used to think spending $100 on a knife was outrageous, know I see Microtechs at $400 a pop and think "I could do that... yeah." Welcome to Bladeforums, I hope you get as much outta this place as I have. You'll meet a lot of real nice people here, some of which I've been lucky enough to meet in person. It's nice to have you here in our growing family of steel addicts.

I'd type more but my Dalton is begging to be played with.:D

Heh, Thanks for all the kind words and advice guys. I hope to fit in just like the vets here! I think Im going to go find a Desperado to try out soon, as I guess with most upcomming hobbyists, you have to start somewhere. I dont have ALOT of money to spend now, but in the future, I will be more willing, now I'll play it frugaly. ;) I foudn the desperado for just under 50 I think, and now Im actually leaning toward something more reliable, like a PH ( Pocket Hobbit ). However, I've studied up on this, and read some past forums about RAKAT and the rolling lock fiasco, so I dont wanna bring up any bad blood with that thread again. However, from what I hear the PH is reliable and tough under most conditions. Im just not sure where to start. I want a knife that can take cutting rope, box, anything with ease, and beutifull and unique enough to show off, which is half the fun. :)I want it to last ( blade wise mostly ) until I can get my collection up and kicking with more quality knives as I have seen around the forums. Custums, etc. I've always had a nack for the unusuall and unique, thats why I've fallen in "like" (not love) with the Desperado and the PH. Any words of wisdom from the vets here are welcome, even criticism! Again, thanks for your help, I feel like im at home already! -Hunter

Glad to see that the bug has bitten you! It only gets worse! I think you will find that even though your tastes will change, your first knives always will have a special place. If you are interested in the desperado, I do have the Hombre, which is a 4" folding model with the same blade style. It cuts like the dickens with the recurve. I do plan on putting it up for sale along with a few other knives soon, but if you are interested, please email me.
Welcome aboard

Mongo

I like the feel of the rubber handles on the Cold Steels, has a good grip and dont feel "cheap".

My favorite Cold Steels are The Peac Keeper II and the Safe Keeper II. How can any knife knut not love the safe keeper II's i say:

Welcome to the forums by the way, I am new here also, gets addicting you'll soon find out, Not just buying knives but reading and posting here too.

Welcome to the forums. I don't know much about Cold Steel handles but the Spyderco Zytel handles hold up very well. I think they probably have some in your price range too. My first knife, other than SAKs, was a Spyderco Delica. Mongo's right the first knives will always be special.

Welcome Fireshaker. A few notes about the PH, since you metioned it. I have one that I had to search out from a B&M in ALASKA! I love it, but for a utility knife, I would look elsewhere. They are not cheap, and since it seems REKAT has gone out of making knives you will be SOL if the thing breaks on you. Also bear in mind that for the ~$150 that the PH costs you get a knife with a gritty action (mine did at least) and no pocket clip, but rather a belt holster (which I fing cool, but somewhat impractical oftentimes). Don;t mean to make it sound like a bad knife. I sure love mine. They do come up with good examples ~$100 on the for sale forums from time to time, but not too often. If you are looking for a wicked fighting folder, especially for reverse grip then this knife might be for you. But if you want a knife that is not too expensive, has a cound company backing its product, and is useful for EDC chores I would look at another knife. Hope this is useful to you.

Hi FireShaker and welcome to Bladeforums!

Funny thing, I'm twice your age and money is still hard to come by!:D
Anyway, enjoy your stay!

Can't be of much help with Cold Steel/rubber grips as I don't have any. I do have a Fällkniven F 1 with "Thermorun" handle and that feels fine. Best outdoor/survival/utility knife I ever had!

Bo

Welcome Fireshaker,
I've used the Cold Steel Master Hunter to field dress several deer and found the kraton handle to be a big plus. I especially like the tacky grip even when the knife is wet which makes for safe handling.
Having said all of that, this forum quickly expanded my interest in sharp pointy things. There are alot of great knives out there....I hope you enjoy the journey.
Jim

welcome. i don't have any cold steel knives, but i would second the suggestion of spyderco knives if there are any that appeal to you, they're well made and the company has excellent customer service.

Welcome Fireshaker. Hope you enjoy this place and it's cast of characters at least as much as I do.
