nice little knife but dont know how it would perform in self defense scenario because it has no guard.all opinions welcome

Kitchen knives and screwdrivers have been extremely effective for a long time, don't worry about it. As mankind moves on in time and knives are used less often for defense/combat you see more elaborate designs and gadgets for fighting - it's just to sell shit.

If you have to ask the question you are better off with pepper spray or even large stick anyhow.

If you are really concerned go stab and hack at some stuff with a steak knife, the guard doesn't matter if you thumb cap the end or reinforce with your palm. It's more important for wet/bloody hands of hunters than for use as a weapon.
