Hello! It’s been a LONG time… and a regret.

I knew it has been a long time since I’ve been around the porch, but I didn’t know it has been 5 ½ years!

I’ve been using, carrying, and enjoying the handful of traditional folders these last few years and overall have been quite content.

I recently came back to the USA and left my knives back in South America knowing that I wanted to pick up a new one since it’s been so long… the plan was to replace my Northwoods Norfolk whittler, my one knife I really really regret selling. My wife is even onboard and she encouraged me to pick up a new slip joint with Mammoth bark… apparently that’s not a thing anymore either!!! What in the world is going on?

I’ve learned about my preferences over the last decade and I really like that pattern! To my shock, they’re not available… and even more shocking is how few GEC knives are in stores now! What has happened over the last almost 6 years? GEC (imho) knocked those Northwood Norfolks out of the park.

I miss this knife! IMG_5515.jpeg

I also have my eye on the GEC 57 Geppetto whittler and a pipe dream would be the 2009 Case Bose Norfolk whittler. The lock back whittler is beautiful too… and the cattle knife, ha! While I refresh the “For Sale” 20 times a day, please feel free to share pics of you favorite whittlers and share some stories of why you love a whittler pattern or perhaps you too sold a knife that you regret letting go.

Good Luck getting a new GEC at the release price.
The last couple years the more popular patterns are "sold out" literally inside one or two seconds at the dealers after the release time.

(The "flippers" on ePrey have a full selection complete with several of each handle materials the moment the knife is released ... at "only" 2x to 5x the issue price, of course. 🙄)

EDIT:
Supposedly available for immediate shipment ...

I won't give my theory on how that would be possible. 😇

Yeah, good luck... GEC doesnt make very many knives and they get snapped up by flippers mostly (or dudes who have some connections with sellers and they have to collect 2 of every variation of everything even though they are just photo props basically). Id love to have one of their whittlers because I whittle with a Case Seahorse whittler and really like it, Id like to try a GEC to compare, but buying a new knife is basically impossible for the average person with a life and some self respect. Lol

Hang around the exchange here and hope you show up at the right minute to see the knife you want. Thats my advice. There are some cool people here who might help you too.

As far as whittlers, like I said I really like the Case. The Seahorse looks strange but it really works very well, very comfy. I used to use a Rough Rider knockoff copy and it sucked, so I was a little scared to get the real deal but I am glad I did.

Welcome back!

Yeah, I have zero plans on buying from somewhere else. It’s the exchange here on BF that I’ve been refreshing over and over.

The exchange is where it’s at! Hopefully I’ll see a Northwoods Norfolk like mine that I sold will come available. It would be icing on the cake if it had mammoth bark!

Hi, glad to see you on the porch. I've recently joined here on the forum since you've been away 🤣
Ditto to what everyone else has said about GEC's being hard to get ahold of. I agree your best bet would be here on the exchange.
Anyway you asked for pics of whittlers? Here's my only one, it's an old splitback Queen I inherited from my late grandfather. One of the secondaries has been broken somewhere along the line. It has enough of a nail nick you can still access it though so it's not a total loss. I've never messed with the whittler pattern before. After carrying this one around some I can see the appeal, it's a pretty nice carry. I may look for a better example at some point.

Good luck in your search! 👍

Most likely you will never see a Northwoods Norfolk for sale on the BF exchange. If one did pop up it would probably sell for $400 or more. With Mammoth handles it would probably cost more.

I would try to pick up a few of the more current models to hold you over until that Northwoods Norfolk comes along. Have you seen the recent 62’s?

Holy cow! When I sold mine (pictured in the first post), I sold it for about a quarter of that. That’s nuts… I mean, mammoth bark obviously drives the price up, but that type of inflation is way more than I expected.

going to check out the 62s now…

You sold a mammoth Northwoods Norfolk Whittler for about a $100. That’s crazy. That is a highly coveted and rare knife. I bought my ebony Northwoods Norfolk Whittler a few years ago second hand for $425.

Nope, not the mammoth. I’d like to get a mammoth, lol. Mine was the jigged bone pictured in my first post. And yeah… that’s a crazy price you paid!! I can’t believe the prices I’m seeing.
