Well i came across this site by accident and love it im a struggling sharpener. I use very fine thin blade knives i have been paying a man to sharpen them for me since 1997 when my home was flooded and i lost all my tools. Ive decided i need to begin again doing this myself. Where is the best place to buy and what do u suggest i use.
thx Califgold

For sharpening? Um... how detailed are you getting? Most of us use Spyderco Sharpmakers or similar systems... are you talking belt grinders... water stones... silica stones... sandpaper?

Thanks for your reply what i had before was a rubber wheel and i would use it to get the edge and then i would use a buffer wheel with alot of compound to finish it off. I guess right now i need to be treated as i have no knowadge at all and start from scratch its been over 10 years. I bought a slow wet grinder from harbour if that will work i would like to buy the correct stones i need. I also was reading about the use of leather straps. All info welcome thanks Califgold

Welcome to the forums!

Your best bet to finding out about sharpening methods may be to search previous postings. Using the search function can be confusing at first. Go to the BladeForums.com Service and Support section sub forum located in the General Knife Discussion area. There is a sticky post entitled "Search Engine FAQs & Tips". Check it out and you should be able to find tons of good info. If you can not find what you want just ask as there are many very knowledgeable persons who post on this site.

Good Luck

What type of knives are we talking about kitchen, wood carving, pocket etc.?
I've always freehanded all of my blades and tools,I can't comment on manny of the sharpening systems but for me a diamond steel or stone for reprofiling, and medium and fine ceramic stones and rods cover most of my needs.A loaded or plain leather strop (depending on desired finish) adds the final touch.

Good luck
