Hello everyone,
I am currently a superintendent in Brooklyn, New York and sad to say not in one of the better neighborhoods. As most will probably know beforehand that NYC has strict laws and I am aware of the situation, but I am still in need of an EDC that is very handy for cutting wires as well as being tactical in the less hopeful chance of having to defend oneself. So far I am looking over RAT 3s,Gerbers, and Busse ANNIVERSARY MEAN STREET CG. If anyone could please recommend something that they believe will suit my needs better from their personal experience I would really appreciate it. The restrictions are that the blade of the knife must be below 4 inches, sheath available, rust-resistant, easy to hold edge, and of course tactical as well as durable for every day carry.
I know that I am being broad, but I would really appreciate any suggestion.

P.S.! No budget, I am a firm believer in the saying, "I am not rich enough to afford buying cheap shit".

~Thank you :)

If money is not an issue, I would suggest Fällkniven F1 Swedish Pilot Survival Knife 3.8" Satin VG10 Blade with Zytel Sheath.

Total length: 210 mm (8.3")
Blade length: 97 mm (3.8")
Blade thickness: 4.5 mm (0.18"), tapered
Tang: Broad, protruding
Weight (knife): 150 g (6oz)
Steel: Lam. VG10
Blade hardness: 59 HRC
Handle: Thermorun

Here is a link to the product in knife center: http://www2.knifecenter.com/item/SWEDF1EK/Fallkniven-F1-Swedish-Pilot-Survival-Knife-38-inch-Satin-VG10-Blade-Zytel-Sheath

The price is not cheap, but the knife is worth it.

I forgot to mention it, but the blade has a convex edge profile. That may seem initially as hard to sharpen, but actually it is quite easy. Personally I think it is easier to hand sharpen convex edge than normal v-edge. All you need is mousepad and few sheets of sandpaper (waterpaper). For good instructions see: http://brkca.com/convex.htm

Hello sir,

Do you mind my asking what you are a superintendent of? I also carry the same title, but run a crew of equipment operators, mechanics, and laborers. I only ask so I can get a feeler for what kind of work the knife would be involved in.

Before I even know that though, my first suggestion is this one:

http://www.bladehq.com/item--Chris-Reeve-Nyala-Fixed--4717

The Chris Reeve Nyala.

Legendary Chris Reeve Knives fit and finish in a 3.75" fixed blade (with leather sheath) S35VN steel so it's a stainless, meaning less maintenance than your standard carbon steels that require oiling to keep from rust. Also, S35VN has been around quite awhile, and while some have deemed it a rather pedestrian steel as of late because of all the "super steels" that are out there... this is still an amazing knife steel.

If you're looking for a fixed blade, I think this would be a good start.

Get a leatherman supertool and a cellphone. Leatherman for the utility tasks, cellphone to call the police instead of going ninja on someone...less jail that way.

+1 for the leatherman, but personally I'd rather go to jail alive than die with a phone in my hand ;)

If you like the Rat 3 design, also look at the ESEE 3, I think the general consensus is that ESEE does a noticeably better heat treat (correct me if I'm wrong)

I'm not familiar with NYC knife/gun restrictions, but it seems like using a handgun that you carry with a permit is more effective, safer, and easier to defend should you go to court than using a knife, at least from my admittedly limited experience here in PA.

couldn't agree more. Ask yourself, seriously, when was the last time you got into a knife fight?

Honestly, with the laws in New York being what they are, it might be a better idea to get a taser or pepper spray. If you must get a weapon of some kind, you might be able to (definitely check your laws) get a collapsible baton.

Don't get a knife to use as a weapon. Get a knife as a tool, get a self defense item for a weapon. Not only is slashing or stabbing an attacker going to make you look bad (it could be viewed as killer intent), most knives just plainly suck as weapons. You either need a lot of training, or a big enough knife to intimidate your opponent. Neither are practical for the everyman Joe.

Get a pair of Kleins or hawks for cutting the wire, use the knife for things that won't destroy the edge after one use.

The very best advice that I can give is leave NYC and never go back. No matter what you choose, you will likely end up in jail , or worse, dead. The role of police is to enforce the law, not protect people. NYC laws will not allow law abiding citizens to carry tools such as guns or effective knives to protect yourself. So in order to effectively protect yourself, you will be breaking the law. Only the bad guys that you need protection from are effectively armed in NYC. Them, and the police. Everyone else is prey to the armed predators.

No budget but you are considering Gerbers?! Stay away from Gerber. I would recommend a Kabar TDI or anything from Becker or ESEE.

You must remember that this guy lives in New york. I am wary about recommending a leatherman to the guy... Carrying a kabar will definitely earn you jail time, or maybe even an officer involved shooting...have fun!

Try a self defense sharpened pencil.
