I only own 3 knifes and am not interested in Collectors knifes but tactical autos and certain folders, the 3 knives that I have are S&W auto Extreme Ops, Gerber 06 auto with the G-10 handle and a Recon 1 Cold Steel. All 3 have the Tanto blade as well as partially serated edge. I read that S&W is a bad knife and I dont see much on the other 2 I mentioned. I have had no issues with any of these knifes, are these considered "bad Knifes" ? If so why? Let me be clear I am asking in general for opinions and enjoy the ones I own and they work for me, is there anything that these knifes lack compared to Spyderco, Benchmade ect?

Thanks for any replies.

S&W is generally bad quality control, bad blade steels, and bad design. I'm not sure about the Gerber. The Cold Steel is a good knife. Also Tanto blades are only good for tactical situations, which do not come up near as much as EDC situations

First, Welcome to Blade Forums. Their are many different views on the different makes of knives. The S&W auto Extreme Ops, Gerber 06 auto with the G-10 handle and other out their seem to be a lower quality then Spyderco and Benchmade. There you just heard another opinion. If these work well for you then enjoy what you have. I feel that if you purchased one of the other makes you mentioned and compared them to the ones you have (steel quality, fit and finish edge retension etc) you might notice why others do not think the quality is there. Enjoy this forum for there is allot to learn for all of us.

Welcome.

Maybe if you tell us more about what exactly you mean by "tactical autos and certain folders" and what you like about those 3 knives you own, we could better tell you if (or if not) those knives do those things well.

For example, if we knew you like them because you feel they are "scary looking" or "hold their edge well," we could give you our opinions on whether or not we feel they do that, and/or give you examples of Spyderco, Benchmade, etc knives that do it better.

Welcome to Bladeforums.

S&W knives are junk. Ignore them altogether.

You don't have to spend much to get a quality knife. Look at Kershaw, Buck, CRKT, and Byrd (a Spyderco brand) and you'll find lots of quality knives under $40. The Ontario Rat 1 is a good choice too. IMO, Byrd is the best of these. Spyderco designs knives to be used, not to look cool. The low end Kershaws are also very good, but it might be harder to find one that "fits".

$40 to some people might seem like a lot of money for a knife (to others here, $400 on a knife is normal). But a trip to the hospital will cost you way more than $40. Never mind the pain, the stitches, the possible severed tendons, nerve damage, loss of dexterity, etc. All because you saved a few bucks on a no-name brand knife from China with a crappy "lock" that failed on you.

Thanks for the replies fellas, I do apoligize about this being the second time I posted this question today..I apparently posted it in the wrong forum and the Forum police told me to move it to here so I did.

I would be lying if I said I didnt like the look of the knifes I have however Im not trying to be "scary" lol For what Ive used my knives for I can say Ive cut rope, and minor things here and there but on the munitions course for work I use my blade to puncture inert rubber grenades that didnt deploy, my gerber and recon blade cut through no problem where my S&W did not, thats the reason I bought my Gerber I was under the impression that the blade was much better. The Recon 1 I bought after watching the deadliest warrior show and the Navy Seal episode showed it being pretty lethal as a SDW. I dont plan on going too crazy as I really only need 1 knife and a good backup for whatever. Mainly I was surfing through the forums here and didnt see much of anything on Gerber and Cold Steel. BTW the locks seem pretty sturdy and effective which as you mentioned is important.

Thank You all for the welcome.

Def stay away from S&W knives, junk and not worth your time.

Like many have mentioned, you can find many great knives for around the $40 mark, give or take a few dollars.

For example.....

Spyderco Tenacious
Ontario RAT 1
Kershaw Cryo Ti
Kershaw OSO Sweet

Those are just a few, but you can find MANY other knives that are great choices.

But like Planterz said, the last thing you want is to end up cutting yourself because of a cheesy knife that didnt have a solid build.
