Hello everyone, and thanks for having me here. This seems like a really neat board and I am glad to be here.

I have one of my late father's old bowie. It is about 40 years old or so and the leather stacked ring handle has become brittle and there is minor damage to a couple of the rings. It doesn't appear as if the whole handle is so bad that the whole thing needs replacing but one of the damaged rings will come off slightly if pulled a bit. So I was wondering if there is any type of whether proof leather adhesive that would work well in repairing minor leather ring damage.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

You could wrap over the existing leather with some thin leather stitched on the bottom side of the knife. There is lots of info on how to do this. Just an idea though, you may want to keep the knife just as you got it. I have one of my Dad's knife and dont want to change a thing on it.

Good clear pictures would be a start.

It really depends on the condition of the leather. Is it coated & polished, oiled, or is it dry and will absorb liquids? If it is the latter, you might be able to use layers of linseed oil to soak & set the leather washers in place so it will stay there. Kinda like letting glue soak into it so everything sticks together. You can then give it a couple layers of beeswax to protect it.

If that won't work, then you may need to replace the original leather with new.

The rings have gotten old and a bit dry. It looks like at one time they where polished. Its just one ring that broke and it will stay in place...I was just wondering if I could use a minor adhesive to get it to stick together. I will see what I can do later today about getting pics. Thanks for the the help.
