Hi there, my Uncle gave me this Buck Knife when I was 13 years old. I'm now 30 and have had it ever since. I have used it thousands of times and it still works perfectly. He used to go to church with the owner of Buck, and he gave my uncle 10 of these knives to give to his family for Xmas and said that Buck never produced them for the public. I haven't been able to find an EDC that I enjoyed as much as this knife, but I like it so much that I am about ready to retire it so that I don't end up ruining it. Please help me ID this knife!

I apologize for the dirty looking fingers--I own a BBQ cleaning and repair company and today was a bit of a rough one!

Thanks for the quick reply. I just looked around a little bit online and found some pictures of it. I'm in the market for a knife ($50-$100 range) to replace this Buck. So far it appears that Spyderco is the brand to pursue. I have also looked at some Kershaws and a few others. I will get light duty out of this knife out in the field and probably heavier duty on camping trips. This is something for another thread though.

Why are you replacing it?

It's not going anywhere but the shelf next to my other cherished belongings. One day I'de like to pass it down to my kid, so I'm going to buy something similar that I can use out in the field. Some rust spots show up in the pictures but aren't visible to the naked eye. It's in great shape and I'de like to keep it that way. I'm gonna post a new thread pretty soon to discuss my replacement options. Stay tuned--and thanks for the reply!

Understand. I like that knife.

Thanks to everyone for helping me identify this knife. I have more knowledge of knives now than I did when I first posted this thread (perusing for two weeks straight will do that to you) and when my Uncle gave me this knife he did mention it was some sort of a unique knife. If you look closely at my first photo on this thread you'll notice the shape of the blade is closer to Tanto (what is this shape?) than every other Taclite I see on the internet. Anybody able to identify if this model was ever sold or if I got one of the early models before it was perfected? I think I got this knife at least 17 years ago. One other thing--for those interested in buying a taclite online I would highly recommend one. the G10 handle literally doesn't have a scratch after 17 years of EDC, and the blade, while significantly scratched due to bad sharpening, is still sharp as hell. The locking mechanism I initially thought was revolutionary, but came to find out it's just a glorified Liner lock. But that's OK because it's the only knife I've found with this design and it's solid. I only hope my Delica 4 looks and works this well after that much time! Nice work on these Buck, just a shame they're not more popular.

99% sure the tip was broken and the spine was ground down

That's interesting. It is a strange design and it does look like the tip was ground down. The owner of Buck went to the same church as my Uncle and he personally handed him 10 of these knives (edit: they all had this same blade shape) to give to his family for Xmas. On that same token I guess it really is a one-off Buck knife made this way from the factory, although it may have been a tester or something before given to my Uncle. It's a super sturdy blade shape because of that grinding though.

wow! what a neat little package!
btw, is that flattened bit on the tanto tip
the same finish as the rest of the blade?
Which in should be a bead blasted dull gray?
That ought to tell if this was factory finished or a post factory mod.
rumor has it that the late kit carson has something to do with the tactlite?
can't believe it's that old.
guess it's true that great ideas remain fashionable.
