Bought an mtech knife from a flea market and realized how handy a pocket knife is. It was decent, but didn't hold an edge.

I have never been one to carry a pocket knife but I decided to go ahead and get a good starter knife. After some research, went with a budget friendly Kershaw Grid 2200. I'm hoping I made a good choice on the knife and welcome opinions on it

Looks to be a solid choice. The materials are typical for the price point and the blade shape appears very functional. You’ll likely notice better edge retention when compared to your previous knife, as I think MTECH typically uses 440A steel - which is often called “surgical stainless” - and that is just not a particularly good steel for a blade that you aren’t just going to throw away after using once (like you would with the surgical scalpels that steel is sometimes used for)

Welcome!

Hello there, you made a nice choice especially considering you are just starting out. I own a few Kershaw knives myself and my experience with them has been very positive. Chances are, if you hang out with us for very long, you will eventually upgrade your edc. Lots to choose from out there, and the folks here will be very helpful when you get the itch for something new and improved.

Your Kershaw is leaps and bounds better than your other knife.

Hang with us for a while and you'll become a full-fledged Bladehead!

Welcome aboard. :)

Welcome!

No experience with that particular Kershaw, but their budget Chinese models are almost all very solid, serviceable blades backed by a stellar warranty. If you decide the hobby isn't for you, it will probably serve you well for many, many years.

If, on the other hand, you get bitten by the knife bug you'll probably be on to pricier and slicier knives within a couple of months. In that case, watch out for your wallet as this place gets expensive really quick!

And, as a gentle nudge into the madness, if you want something a cut above the Kershaw check out the Steel Will Cutjack and the Ruike P801. ;)

Both fine knives for the money.

Welcome to the rabbit hole, brother. My love of edged tools initially grew out of nothing more than my camping and hunting needs and took off from there. Thousands of dollars and man-hours later, I'm still an avid enthusiast for reasons having much less to do with those original concerns.

You've found a good place to safely satiate your interests, needs and curiosity. There's an incredible array of experts, aficionados, hobbyists and scoundrels around here to help scratch whatever knife related itch is currently in need of the most scratching. As with most things in life, you find you usually get what you pay for but the variations on that theme are endless. I would strongly suggest that you check out some of the custom makers around here because they are an endless source of inspiration and bang for your bucks. As your disposable income, interests, fascination and level of expertise begins to grow and hone itself, consider jumping in with both feet and buying a membership to support this incredible forum/resource. Cheers!
