I just joined the forum on Friday and have already asked a lot of questions and received some good replies and dare I say, it seems I could "forge" a few friendships here. ;) Sadly I think there will be a lot more taking than giving in the advice and opinion department for quite some time because I am a newbie.

My "handle" is Miden, not because I am hiding but because it is my knife making name. My name is Mike Pretorius, my wife is Denise, you figure out the rest. Her name is incorperated because of her support and tolerance regarding knife making and many other things.
I live in Montreal, I came to Canuckistan in '96 from South Africa.

Howdy all.

uh, were aware of the this definition?

Midden
 1. A dunghill or refuse heap.
 2. Archaeology A mound or deposit containing shells, animal bones, and other refuse that indicates the site of a human settlement. Also called kitchen midden .

Haha what a warm response!

This place is awesome. You can ask a question about a little-known 14th century east indian smelting technique, and somehow a freak expert will come out of the shadows and offer a dissertation on how to do it....well maybe not.....

I learned everything, and I mean everything, off this and one other forum. No books, no videos (yeah, i know i should get some)....just these forums...

Welcome!

Post some pics, we all love pics!

Welcome Mike! Good to have you aboard, this is a great place to learn, read, ask questions, and make friends. In a few years you'll have experience under your belt and be contributing back to the community with helping new guys such as yourself.

Now, get out to the shop and make some knives! :D

thanks Tik Tock, yes I see there is a lot of wisdom here, good, 'cause I have a lot of learning to do. Maybe my knife name should change though, it might kinda put people off buying a knife from me!?

Welcome Miden, hope to see some of your work here soon,
until then sit back and enjoy all the forum has to offer:D

TiK Tock, here is a pic of a knife I made recently. Hope it comes out.

You need a host web site to post pics or become a paid gold or platinum member here and you can use the 'manage attatchments' box when you are making a post to browse your own computer and pull up pics from there.

I use Imagecave most of the time. http://www.imagecave.com/albums.asp?album= Registration is free and there are several others you can belong to that are free also. Image shack is very popular also.

Once you browse your computer on using the software from the host site you upload pics to it of your choosing and sometimes resize them to make them faster to load for those on dial up.

Once a pic from your computer is uploaded on Image Cave which I am most familar with you go to the picture after the album reloads. Click "modify image" and look at the number currently listed for "new width" and "new height". I have found that pictures no wider than 412 and under fit the page very well on most forums and do not cause the page to be set up so that you have to scroll back and forth to read the script. If you delete the old number for new width and type in 412 then it is just a matter of clicking on the new height area and it will automatcially adjust it to the proper number for you. Then simply click on 'create new jpeg'.

Once done you simply go to the picture that you now have listed under the same name as the original with 'copy' on the end and copy the URL address.

Come back to the forum and clik on the yellow box right under the size box and paste the picture you selected and copied the URL for there by right clicking inside the box and then left clicking. Hit ok and you are done.

If you do not have the windows free picture resizing tool on your computer for XP you can download that here. I like this too and it is free as I said and much easier than the resizing on the web hosts sites but sometimes you still need to resize them on the host sites because the windows tool cannot make some small enough. Here is the link to the free download for the resizing tool.

Welcome Mike and wife, It doesn't pay to leave the ladies out. Especially ones that suppot you, in your knife making. Post a photo, we love pictures. Not too scary, please. Fred

Thank you for the welcomes guys, thanks for the info regarding posting pics STR. I will try it out.
Bruce Bump, I read what you said about your daughter-in-law being headed down to New Orleans with the Red Cross on another post (hurricane affects all) and I would just like to repeat, there are not many angels left!
Thanks again for the welcome guys!

thank you for the warm response Sweany.
Just ONE "D" you may have noticed
And that was the second thing. :D

Welcome Mike, you've found a good place. There's so much arcane knowledge here you will never find its limits. I guarantee that someone will be able to answer your question regardless how odd it might seem to you at the time. If it weren't for Shop Talk I'd still be some hack grinding away in my basement with no baseline to work from. These guys have done so much that they will give you a perfect place from which to work your skills. You'll find that for the most part folks' patience is unlimited and their ability to help is unmatched anywhere.

If you pay for a membership you'll be able to take advantage of the Search function (of limited value in my experience) and the ability to upload attachments (second, in my opinion, to serving them inline in your posts). But the best thing you get from joining is the sense of being a part of something greater than yourself. The Blade Forum community is a unique place and well worth supporting even if you, like many here, only frequent Shop Talk.

Anyway, Welcome! I hope you ask a lot of specific questions and make many knives. You'll find that your work progresses very quickly given the influence the makers here can offer you. It's a wonderful thing. I usually start and end my day here, and probably always will.

Hi Dave,
I think I already encountered some of your wisdom in my first busy week-end.
Good to hear from you and thanks for the welcome.
I am presently the hack in the basement but I see a light at the end of the tunnel that may not be a train!
I spent a lot of time this week-end reading and learning already.
For the longest time I have had very little motivation but I can already feel a metamorphisis happening. I look forward to growing.
Thanks also Zoo, Fred and Sunfishman.
sincerely,
Mike

Sweany I sure feel for Mike, he probably has no clue what you're up to and most likely is taking you seriously! Not me man, I got your number many moons past. :D

Note to Mike: Toss one back Sweany's way and he'll feel all better... :D He's kinda like IG in that regard, he'll pump you until you either break or bend; if you bend you'll be his buddy forever. Trust me, I know this hardass bunch. ;) Not an evil soul among em - saints one and all in my book. ('Course, my book is a very limited edition...) Saints you can live with; evildoers, like most politicians, you will try with all your heart to avoid. Fortunately we have few of either of the latter stripe in Shop Talk. This is a polite and respectful community! :D

:D :D :D

Oh gawd, I'm ROTHFLMAO!!! Holy Cripes, am I a super comic or what?! I should be a headliner in Vegas! Oh, I love my wit! :D (someone should; you know you do :D)

Sorry Darren ,missed you. Thanks for the welcome too.

Dave, Im okay but thanks for the support.

Yes, I do like your wit and as for politicians.....well. Watch out though, wit is one of the few things they do not tax yet, you just never know...... :D :D
