Hey guys, first venture into hog heaven here.

After a recent layup and surgery, I've decided to change some things about my life. See here http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=587484 if you really want to read about it.

One of the things is I want to get the things I really want, instead of settling.

I've been eyeing the Hellrazors on the for sale forums for quite a while and they keep calling my name. I think they're sexy as hell, but have some questions.

I'm probably never going to get into a knife fight, so I'm coming more from an outdoorsman perspective. How are these for woods usage? Are they nimble enough to notch traps and stakes, etc? How do they chop? I know it's not an axe, but for weekender use, I'd probably never chop anything over 3", 4" max.

Would it be correct to assume they'll fit a large Spec Ops sheath?
Finally, can they be sharpened easily with a DMT diamond hone?

Yes.

The HR is a fine knife indeed. For field use it can hold it's own but I have found it to be not great to be honest. A SARSquach or ASH-1 might be a better choice for you. In saying that I own a HR and it is the knife I would take with me if I ever got back to Iraq or Afghan.

Here's a review of the ASH-1, SAR5 and HR side by side. It should give you a little info on why the ASH-1 might be better suited for your needs. If you decide you can live without the chopping and want to stay with Busse you might consider a SAR5 as a great field knife. Once reprofiled and sharpened it works very well at all field/bushcraft tasks.

(scroll up to top for all three posts in the review, happy reading)

I just had a Hell Razor made through the custom shop, and should be ready to ship soon. I think that it will make a fine slicer, and will pocess great toughness...based on the reveiws that I have read...I would not hesitate to take it to the field, for a multitude of tasks...maybe not for all, but for plenty others;)

I agree that the ASH-1 would make a great companion to the HR.

You are correct...it is a sexy design!!

Cant wait.

I am new to the Busse forum but I just bought 2 HR's. One is in the mail the other is going out for leather. I really like these knives for some reason. Have not put them to use yet but like I said I just like um. Have Sarsquatch and think that is an awesome camp and field knife seems like it would be a better chopper than A Hells Razor. These guys on this forum know there Busses but I know if ya get a Hell Razor you will like it and I am sure It will handle ;ight woods craft fine.

IMO the HR chops just fine for its size (after some thinning and convexing of the edge). damn fine knife

+1 on that! The HR is a mighty fine lightweight field knife. A CGASH1 will only outchop it because it is nearly twice as heavy .320 vs .187. A skinny ASH1 is more comparable to a HR and is also a mighty fine lightweight field knife.

The SARsquatch will outchop both the HR and Skinny ASH1 but is a tad bit bigger.

Any of the above mentioned knife will serve you just fine. You can also look into the SFNO but they are a bit more money and harder to find that the ASH1, HR, or SARSquatch.

Thanks for the input.
I'm not too concerned with the chopping so much as I carry this for chopping (20" Ang Khola), so this is more for "medium knife" duty.

HR's also fit in small spec-ops sheaths perfectly, with care. Just need to make sure the kydex doesn't shrink when you soften it. The bottom picture with the B+T HR is in a small one.

The HR is one of my most favourites - it's got to be one of the sexiest designs ever. I wouldn't hesitate to carry it in the field - just ask the older one of the three here, in the company sheath!

Hellrazor is a great chopper for it's size.

Here I chopped through a birchtree with my MudRazor that in fact is a HellRazor without the corrugated bevels and a slightly different handle...

The birchtree was not very tiny and had a rather hard core. It took me approx. 35 minutes to get all the way through (that says more about me than about the knife I'm affraid:o;):D

That's good to know. But I've got a LG Spec-Ops from a RAT-7 that I gifted, so I'll probably just use it.

Thanks for the pics, the HR sure does look like it chops above its size class.
Since I'll have my kukri with me most times, I don't know that I'll ever use it to chop. To be honest, right now, my primary reason for wanting to get one is just that, well, I want to get one. :D

Not really, I've had a real hard time getting through seasoned birch that size even with my Ang Khola that I posted earlier, and that's 20" long and 3.5 pounds of steel that's gone through 3" pine limb in a single shot, and 2" oak in a single shot. Birch, I've found, can be some rather stubborn stuff.

The HellRazor is one sexy knife, I love mine:D

(oh and I also have a HI 20" Ang Khola;))

AFter fuddling with my Mud Razor a bit, I wound up grabbing a HR-CE from teh Store a few weeks back.

DANG that edge is wicked. Very good field knife. Hacked thru green wood without any effort at all.

While I love the Squatch, the HR-CE (already thinned and convexed) is a great field knife that would be a bit lighter to pack in and out.

As much as I love the look and feel of the HR I prefer the ASH1 and the SFNO for camp use. One of my favorite camp tasks is batoning wood and the sharp swedge and contoured spine on the HR is a disadvantage there.

To me the HR is more of a fighting knife.
