Which is the best Emerson Knife?
- for slaughtering seals?
- carving a new igloo?

And for all of you out there who don't already realize it.

For folders, the Commander has to be my favourite.

The handle is made of thick G-10 slabs and thick titanium liners that readily engage the blade when locked. The grip is ergonomically superb and has an ample guard for thrusting and overall retention.

Although the blade is more utilitarian than some of Emerson's other designs, the reverse curve cuts very aggressively in slashes and just normal utility cutting.

The innovative Wave feature makes deployment a breeze.

The knife is just solid and constructed quite well.

Over the past year and a half, many people on both forums have sung its praises. You will not be dissapointed.

Hope this helps,

If you are going for his production knives. I would agree with Jason. The Commander is the best. I wouldn't underestimate the SpecWar folder. It is a deceptive knife. It has a good feel to it, no matter how you are using it. It has a good, deep finger otch to keep your hand from sliding onto the blade.

If you are talking handmades, well.....The CQC-8 is my favorite, while the CQC-6 is the most easily obtained.

Can you tell me how the Wave design of the handle and blade make it a fast deploying knife?

Terry, when you carry the Commander in your front pocket, the "Wave" is against the seam of the pant leg. The blade is tip up and the notch that is the "Wave" is also in the up position. As you draw the knife out of your pocket, the "Wave" rides up that seam and catches the top of the seam of your pocket. As you keep drawing the knife, the blade pivots into the open position.. It is a very subtle idea actually.

Thanks Dirk. Now, as I look at the notch and visualize the position in the pocket do I understand the opening principle. I just couldn't see how a little recurve on the blade could help opening.
I favor the pocket clip to be mounted on the pivot end. It's just what I've gotten used too. My first tactical folder was a Benchmade made CQC7, so that's what I practiced on. Emerson Web FAQ states that most people prefer the clip on the but end. But then again, I also heel-and-toe down shift with my heel on the brake, the opposite of the accepted way. But that's a topic for another forum. Anyway. As I look at a picture of the Commander, I notice that the clip is not right up against the edge of the scale. How far does it stick out of your pocket. I really like the way my Stryker sits deep in my pocket away from "prying eyes". One more for you - How easily does the blade open? Did it ever open in your pocket? I'd really like to buy this knife but the clip issue delays an immediate snap purchase.

Terry, the knife doesn't sit deep in the pocket. There is about .5" that sticks out of your pocket. The main reason is to easily index the knife.

I haven't had a problem with the knife opening in my pocket. when you use the wave feature or just the thumb wheel the blade opens easily and smoothly.

I have grown to like the tip down carry of a folder. At the Blade show, I saw Bob Kasper doing some draws with his knife. The technique he uses makes the tip down carry way to go. When drawn, there is very little adjustment of the knife to get the proper grip. Emerson is going to produce "waveless" Commanders and I have heard that they may even come with the tip down option.

Even if you purchase a current production Commander, you are getting a great knife, that would require little effort to get used to drawing the knife tip up.
