Help a newbie out? 440HC/420HC

Have I got this correct? "Generally speaking" 2 dot knives and earlier had their blades made of 440HC, which is a little harder steel than 420HC?

edited to add: I'm talking strickly about standard production knives, no custom or special run knives.
 
Have you checked out Joe's sticky on the 110/112 data sheet? Good data there.

I think it says the early steel was 440C not 440HC. They also used 425 for a while before they started using the 420HC of today.
