I have been a collector of all things sharp for years but never really got into the type of steel each was made from. I have been trying to research a little, but I am overwhelmed by the abundance of info.

I am looking at the A.G. Russell bird and trout knife as a game skinning and light duty camp knife. I cant decide on the AUS-8, ATS-34, or D-2 steel.

Depends on if you want stainless or not really.

D2 isn't stainless while ATS-34 is, both are good steels though.

I'm gonna say D2. While it's not a stainless steel, it's very resistant to corrosion. Just take care of it, and it'll take care of you. I'd recommend keeping it lightly oiled and cleaned, and you should be fine. In addition, D2 holds an edge well. Just a word of warning, don't smack it against hardwood or the like. D2 tends to be a touch brittle.

Good choice for a knife. I'd say D2 as well. Unless you want to neglect the moisture factor. Or if you want to be able to do REAL easy in the field sharpening.

AUS8A is very easily resharpened
ATS-34 is very corrosion resistant
D2 is great at edge holding.
