HELP! Adjusting Buck/Strider pivot (kinda long)

I posted in another part of the Forum about eccentric pivot pins, but I was told that the Buck/Strider does not use one. So now I'm here, I hope someone can help me.

A little while ago, I had some work done on my full-size Buck/Strider that neccesitated disassembly of the knife. When I sent the knife out, it opened very smoothly and easily (almost too easily). As with all my knives, I had tightened the pivot just enough to take out side-to-side blade play when the liner was thumbed aside to take tension off the blade tang.

When I got the knife back, it took some force to open the blade. Not only that, but the liner did not make full contact with the tang, as it had when I sent it out. To make matters worse, with the liner thumbed aside, there was significant side-to-side blade play. When I adjusted the pivot to take out the blade play, the blade would not open at all. After disassembling the knife and reassembling it several times, the knife suddenly worked again, like new, even with the pivot tied down pretty tight. Since I didn't do anything differently (that I could tell) I don't know what happened; I was just happy to have my knife working again.

Today, I received a used Mini Buck/Strider. The knife had been disassembled at least once to have some custom work done on it. After cleaning and sharpening the knife, I checked the pivot tension. One side was so loose that the screw turned easily by hand. With the liner pushed aside, there was significant blade play. When I tightened the pivot to take out the blade play, the blade would barely open, and then only with significant force applied. So I am back in the same spot as I was with my other Buck/Strider only now, several rounds of disassembly/reassembly has not cured the problem. And since I don't know how I "fixed" my other knife, I have no lessons to apply to this one.

Please someone, tell me what the "secret" is to putting Buck/Striders back together. I really like the little one, but as of now, it's just sitting in pieces until I learn to put it together properly.
