It's not the washer style (which would be almost pointless) but some of the principles are the same

I'm looking to make a pick handles for some of my lock picks. This isn't it but it will give you an idea.

The usual way to make handles is to add a thicker sleave of plastic. Like a slip-on or heat shrink tubing. I think leather would be ideal since it would be more comfortable than plastic (esp. after tooling) but not as vibration damping as rubber. It also offers enough grip without being sticky. Bonus over time the patina will build up and give them that worn from use not abuse look

I'm thinking of making a handle similar to a conventional riveted sandwich like you'd see on something like

(no, I don't own any clipart knives)

1) Am I being stupid? I've seen handles made from all kinds of wood, and this would get less abuse than a pen.

2) Any advice on riveting? Even if I hammer the leather, compressed it's not going to be much harder than..say maple. But it's much thiner than most knife handles

3) Am I over thinking this? And it's just a 4-6 layers with the washers runing perpendicular to the tang instead of down it?

4) I get the feeling there is something that I'm over-looking. You guys are the best resource I've found (leatherworkers, while knowledgable, don't have much to say on something like this. But theydo have stylin' belts)

Thanks

It would need to be a very light grade of leather in order to fit well on the handle, those picks can be pretty small. it might be better to sew a wrap over the handle than to expect light leather to hold a plank shape or use something too thick for your tool, like 10oz. leather

Maybe a scaled down version of an overstrike wrap on a tomahawk. Just my thought on it.

I'm not 100% sure about the leather thickness. Its from my stock of strop leather. 8lb rings a bell. A test fix with crazy glue will give me an idea if the thickness is correct. I've seen guys use razor handles which are probably thicker than 4 layers and the metal. As I think about it one layer per side is probably perfect.

Rivets are going to be tricky. The thickness is slightly over 1/4 inch. My stock is 3/8 and up. Epoxy would remove the need for rivets but it would look better with brass complementing the leather.

Thanks for the input. If the experiment doesn't work no biggie. But the end result I have in my head would look good. Reality matching my imagination is another matter

One thing to consider is if the pick is hardened then it may be a pain to drill. Worth a try.
