I have what I assume is a pocket pal model; it has brass liners and 3 brass pins visible in the handle. The main blade is marked hoffritz, which I believe is a now out of business outfitter like cabelas or eddie bauer; from what I've heard hoffritz marked knives never had victiorinox stampings on them. The other side is marked Victorinox Switzerland Stainless Rostfrei. The red plastic handles are a bit thinner than my current pocket pal. The shield appears to be metal in the handle and not a impression with silver imprint in it like I had on an early classic or other SAK.

I'm not too knowledgeable of wenger/victorinox history, so I figured I'd ask here.

I do think the key to the age on this knife is that it has "Exposed Rivets" on the scales. I remember seeing something about that on another website but just can not find it right now.

I've looked on wikipedia and other places, but I can't find info on dates exact stampings and etc were used. I had seen a pocket pal? with a bail on eBay which was sold a few days ago. I bid on it, but stopped at $18 :) I think it was really old.

Not sure but a Pocket Pal could also be an option, as a last resort, you can actually contact Victorinox with a photo an specs, they'll sure tell you which model it is.

Info on sakwiki states the brass pins/liners were discontinued around 1961; theres is the gardener as an exception as it has brass pins/aluminum liners.

Looks like this vic is old.

The Excelsior is just like the Secretary but with plastic handles, so maybe an old version of one of those?

The excelsior is a pocket pal w/ keyring, and a popular is a secretary w/ keyring. The first two had plastic handles and the last two metal handles.
