Hi all - my first post here in about five years I think.

I just obtained another Maine-made boy’s axe to keep my Katco company and would appreciate some help putting an estimated date on it.

Unlike most other S&N axes I’ve seen he weight stamp is on the cheek not the underside of the poll.

Lovely old wedge pattern by the look of it, but I won’t find out more til I can pick it up on my next trip to the US.

Any help guessing the age on this much appreciated.

It's hard to date S&N's. If it has a big stamp it's probably older. If it's slightly double stamped it's supposedly older.
And they are synonymously hard to determine whether they are forge welded or mono steel.(without etching)
I have one s&n with the weight stamp on the check. A 3-1/4lb Michigan pattern. I assume it's on the cheek due to the rounded poll of the pattern. I guess that's why I didn't respond earlier. It's not from lack of interest. Just lack of being able to offer any info you didn't probably already know!
I would guess your axe was made between 1930-1960. And that's all that is, a guess.

Thank you both for your replies- I knew it was a tricky question!

I have seen the rdjanckert thread before, in the past and more recently when I was digging around for answers, but didn’t find what I was looking for.

Anyway - nice to have an excuse to post something after so long without a new axe!
